Alex Gavic Shattered His Back but Still Scored Some Incredible Powder the Following Season

Alex Gavic’s season edit is proof that even if you suffer a serious injury, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.

Back in February of 2013, while snowboarding a pillow line in Utah, one of the worst things that you can think of happening to you while snowboarding happened to Alex Gavic.

Alex took a nasty tumble, and snagged his back on a rock below the snow surface, shattering his sacrum and compression fracturing his Lumbar 1 Vertebra in the process.

Luckily for Alex, his friends were nearby and were able to call in a helicopter to have him lifted straight to the local trauma center. It’s worth considering that had he been riding alone, the outcome of the accident could have been far, far worse and you really can’t overestimate the value of riding with friends when you’re out in the back/sidecountry of any snowboard resort – no matter how familiar it may be to you.

Despite the injury, which put him out of action for the rest of the 2013 winter, Alex was back on his board at the end of the year and scored some incredible faceshots that make up the second half of this edit.

It just goes to show that even if you suffer a serious injury there’s a pretty solid chance that you will eventually heal up again, to one degree or another, and that it’s worth gritting your teeth and bearing in the knowledge that life is full of ups and downs.

We’re glad to see that Alex is snowboarding again!
