All of the action from Burton’s premier slopestyle and halfpipe event in the land where people walk upside down, the water goes down the plughole in the opposite direction and folk say ‘sweet as bro’ at the end of every sentence (New Zealand to you and I).
The Burton High Fives brought together some of the world’s best snowboarders to Cardrona, NZ for 4 days of Mini drifting, knife throwing, segway racing, sheep herding(?) and of course, snowboarding. Riders were split into teams over the first two days for a series of off-snow challenges before getting stuck in to the more traditional slopestyle and halfpipe competitions.
Conditions were rather windy for the slopestyle event but that didn’t stop Stale Sandbech and Jamie Anderson from bossing it on the day. Jamie’s run included a back tail, 50/50 on the closeout rail, 50/50 on the rainbow, backside 180 mute, Cab 540 melon, and backside 540 indy. Enni Rukajärvi finished up in second with Silje Norendal rounding out the podium in third.
In the men’s comp, Stale stepped up to stomp a run that included a halfcab 50-50 180 out, hardway 270 on boardslide, boardslide 270 out, frontside 900 double cork indy, Cab 1260 stale and backside 1080 double cork stale. Young guns Kyle Mack and Yuki Kadono took second and third place.
On the pipe side of things, Taku Hiraoka and Kelly Clark took the top spots under cloudy skies. Kelly’s winning run included a huge frontside air, backside 540, frontside 1080, Cab 720, and a frontside inverted 720. 13 year old Chloe Kim took second with Gretchen Bleiler in third. Kelly also came incredibly close to landing her first cab 10 in competition, so that’ll no doubt be one to look out for this season.
Taka Hiraoka scored a massive 94.80 points with a run that included a backside 540, frontside 1260, backside 900, 1080 double cork and Cab 1080. Fellow Japanese rider Ryo Aono (JPN) also had a strong second run with a score of 85.00, enough to see him take a third place behind Greg Bretz.
