The Absolut Team. Pumped on winning the 2010 Wängl Tängl.

Words, pictures and video of what went down in Mayrhofen, 10 -13 March 2010

Last Friday (March 12th) saw the Vans Penken Park in Mayrhofen (Austria) go off with a bang, as not only did the sun and blue skies great the park but the snowboard ‘Gang Jam’ final took place as the main aspect of the Aesthetiker’s Wängl Tängl event for 2010!

Not being concerned with another smallish event that was taking place at the same time over in Tignes (France), namely the relatively unknown European X Games event, the organisers and park shapers laid down a course and an event concept that rivals some of the top snow parks and events in North America, let alone in Europe, and with the special Red Bull sponsored ‘Taco’ or ‘End Section’ this event was always going to be a top end, highly level and progressive event and even with the obvious lack of brand support and sponsorship compared to previous years the riders and crowds were not let down with the scale of what the Wängl Tängl is all about – a team focused snowboard event with amazing park features, a team vibe, art and music all mixed together with a heavy dose of Henry Jackson MC (www.banterbox.org) on the microphone!

The event itself consisted of 2 heats with 8 teams in each heat, of which each team had a total of 3 runs to lay it down and impress the judges with floorless, team focused runs. Since this is a team event then each team had to ensure their runs were clear and without any hand downs, bum slides or stacks as if 1 rider of the 3 fell then the overall run would be marked down, so the pressure was on for sure and many teams lost out to a bum slide or hand down mixed in with amazing, technical runs. Teams like the Gentlemen (Red Bull UK), the Scallywags (Forum Euro riders) and Les Tous de Balles (French & French Swiss crew) all had their scores marked down following amazing runs as one member of each of the teams didn’t stick their runs, even though some of the tricks being pulled included BS Double Corks, SW BS 1080’s and insane bowl skills within the Red Bull ‘Endsection’.

From the 2 heats a total of 4 teams were selected to go through to the finals, 2 from each heat, and the teams consisted of an all Austrian line up of riders which included Aesthetiker Team 1 (Steve Gruber, Werni Stock & Georg Huber), Aesthetiker Team 2 (Chris Kroll, Rudi Kroll & Alex Walch), Team Black & White (Reini Rieser, Mario Wanger & Tom Klocker) and Team Absolut Park (Herby Thaler, Michi Stanschitz & Phillip Gruber) from Flauchauwinkl (or Flash my Winkle as MC Henry Jackson kept putting it). All the team seriously stepped up their game in the final, which consisted of only 2 runs each, and a whole array of tricks were pulled which included insane team performances over both sets of kickers and the Red Bull End Section with riders pulling tricks only inches apart from each other. Stand out props has to go to Team Absolut for their performance within the End Section and flawless tricks over the kickers and they were awarded with the top stop of 1st place due to their coordinated runs and big stylish tricks, but followed closely in 2nd place was Team Black & White with the super smooth tricks from local boy Tom Klocker, and this meant that 3rd spot was between both Aesthetiker teams and Team 1 placed slightly higher giving them they 3rd and final spot on the podium.

Individually, certain riders were also awarded with prizes for their own performances and a certain Mr Tonton Holland was crowned with ruling the End Section (he was pulling front board’s along the hip / gap jump edge that were super stylish which obviously helped with this), local boy Tom Klocker was given the best rookie award for plainly just killing the course (he pulled a SW BS 10 over the channel gap to name but one of his super stylish and tech tricks) and that left the title of best overall rider to be taken by Herby Thaler from the Absolut crew as he (along with his team) were ruling the course all day. Check the photos and video for a full overview of the event finals and for a look at some of the insane tricks pulled and lines taken by the teams within this season’s Aesthetiker Wängl Tängl Jam!

If wanting to watch a contest that is about as far different from the traditional ‘slope style’ jam format and with some of the most progressive and advance courses built, then this event (maybe along with the Intercrew event in Chamrousse, France) is without a doubt the one to attend.

See you next year in Mayrhofen!
