After a very successful grand opening last year, The Reels snowboard film festival is coming back in Annecy from the 4th to the 6th of October. See you on the red carpet!

Inspired by the festival of Cannes and the Sundance Festival… ”The Reels” is THE one and only festival dedicated to snowboarding. From the 4th – 6th October 2013: Annecy – France, Decavision cinema in the center.

The Reels is a snowboarding film festival. The Reels will gather together athletes, directors, producers, industry bigwigs, and fans to premiere thirty snowboarding films.

This festival will be the snowboarding red carpet event, regardless of the style. From freeride to freestyle, with backcountry and urban jib… there will be something for everyone’s taste!

Interview with L’Arrogs, organizer of The Reels

Former rider and now member of the Bataleon posse, L’Arrogs launched the event last year with Gaylord Pedretti from Like That agency, and Aissam ‘Ace’ Dabaoui, rider’s agent. We caught up with him as he was on his way to welcome the jury, just one week before the start.

First of all, I would like to ask you how did it start and how did you get the idea of putting together a snowboard film festival?

I was at SIA in the States and I thought the Award ceremony was good, and that was something we missed in Europe. I’ve always been a huge snowboard films geek, really passionate about this, so to create this opportunity was really exciting. With my friends Gaylord from Like That, and Ice, we had all the ressources needed to try and make it happen. So we did.

The feedback on the first edition has been phenomenal, as far as we know, did you think it could be such a success for its first?

Not at all! We didn’t really know what to expect, and even during the event I was so busy running around everywhere, that it’s only like 3 days later, when I started receiving lot of messages, that I understood people really enjoyed it. I’m still amazed by it and I take this opportunity to thank all the jury, all the rider, and all the partners and sponsors who believed in the event since day one. They all made it possible, and this is why we are back in this year, for hopefully another great event!

Is there any other changes in the award categories this year?

There’s still 11 categories, but we swapped 3, so exit are:

‘Best Froggy’, because it’s an international festival and after the first edition it didn’t really make sense to keep that one. Plus the Snow Garden Festival happening just a week after is doing great for the French side of things, so we don’t have to ‘walk in their garden’ if I can say so.

‘Best Guts’ because I think it wasn’t necessary to keep that one as well.

And ‘Best editing’ because it’s pretty close to the ‘Best cinematography’ award, and I think people maybe didn’t feel it was a great difference between them.

So instead of those, we will have ‘Best Female Performance’, ‘Best documentary’, and ‘Best amateur movie’

Do you think a film produced for the web could win the supreme category?

Why not? I mean there is less and less videos coming out on a physical support, like Nike for example. And today you can now see some very high quality stuff on the web, whether it’s pay per view or not, and things have really changed in that domain. So why not a web movie winning this year? It’s possible for sure.

We heard rumours that a fifth member of the jury will add to Peter Line, Eddie Wall, Ingemar Backman and Nico Droz, can you tell us who it’s going to be?

Annnnd… It’s David Benedek! He received himself a lot of accolades during his riding career, he received the best video part award 2 years in a row in the US, 2003 and 2004, he knows the score, and he also highly participated to the evolution of snowboard movies with his different projects, whether it’s with Robot Food or 91 Words for Snow in 2005.  Back then, he was the first rider to land a Front Double Cork 1260… And he’s still very much involved in the scene, his book ‘Current State: Snowboarding’ received also numerous prices… In short, we are super stoked to welcome him, he will be our head judge this year.

Ok, what other scoop can you tell us before the event?

What? You don’t have enough? Well, how about I tell you who’s coming? Halldor Helgasson, Jake Blauvelt, Gigi Rüf, Victor Delerue, Joe Sexton, Xavier de le Rue, Jake Olson Elm, Eiki Helgasson, Louif Paradis, Jed Anderson, Forest Bailey, Eero Ettala, Justin Bennee, Alex Cantin, Danimals, Nicolas Müller, Scott Stevens, Will Lavigne, Ethan Morgan, Austin Smith, Romain Demarchi, Austen Sweetin, Franck April, Bryan Fox, Stale Standbech , Nic Sauvé, Sylvain Bourbousson, Wojtek Pawlusiak, Gérome Mathieu, Phil Jacques, Nicolas Droz, Kalle Ohlson, Ben Bilocq, Jaeger Bailey, Peter Line, Tyler Chorlton, Alex Tank, Danny Larsen, Niels Shack, Eddie Wall, Zac Marben, JP Solberg, LNP, Ben Thomas Javid, Ingemar Backman, Elias Ellhardt, Frederik Kalbermatten, Darrell Mathes, DCP, Morgan Le Faucheur, Hana Beaman, Mathieu Crepel, Anto Brotto, Dominik Wagner, Leanne Pelosi, David Benedek, Math Schaer, Marc Swoboda, Robin Van Gyn, Benny Urban, Kevin Backström, Sean Black, Tor Lundström, Hans Åhlund, Justin Fronius, Victor Daviet, Fredrik Perry, Janne Lipsanen, Basti Rittig, Toni Kerkela, Petrus Koskinen, Fred Couderc, Jani Sorasalmi, Will Smith, Sami Luhtanen, Tom Guilmard, Sami Luhtanen, Thomas Delfino, Sakari Lahdesmaki, Jon Russell, Teo Konttinen, Ollie Dutton, Antti Jussila, Aymeric Tonin, Tobias Ludescher, Andy Nudds, Ville Uotila, Simon Foster, Ian Ashmore, Joakim Rasmussen, Laurent Duhalde, David Livet, Niko Lansio, Julien Emch, Jamie Pritchard, Anouck Grau, Greg Desjardins … What else ?
