Louif Paradis won the rail contest at the Theatron, Munich!

At his first appearance at an European contest, Louif Paradis was able to secure himself a title right away: the Canadian snowboarder won the Rip CurlRail Sessions at the Theatron at Munich’s
Olympic Park on February 02nd, 2009. Halldor Helgason from Iceland was second and Alex Tank from Germany took third.

“I’m in Europe for the first time, in Germany for the first time, and I’m stoked I won a contest right away!”, Louif Paradis said after the prize-giving. “The location was very nice!” The 22-year-old from Quebec convinced the judges Mathieu Giraud (FRA), Marc Swoboda (AUT) and Basti Rittig (GER) with his creative snowboarding. At the finals of the Rip Curl Rail Sessions by Renault, he enthused the 1,500 spectators at the Theatron with a Nosegrab Gap to Frontside Boardslide on the 10-metre Down Straight Down Rail and a Backside 180 to Switch 50/50 to Switch Backside 180 out on the 10-metre Down Rail. This victory will give the Canadian the opportunity to get to know Europe even better: he got a wild card for the Champs Open 2009 at Crans- Montana (SUI) next weekend, a 5-star event of the Ticket to Ride World Snowboard Tour (TTR).

The spectacular contest took place during the sports trade fair ISPO and began with the qualification in the afternoon. 16 riders took part in the qualification, among them Alex Tank. The 20-year-old from Sonthofen at the Allgaeu, Bavaria, plus seven more riders qualified for the main session where they met the eight seeded riders, like Louif Paradis and Halldor Helgason. Again, the German was one of the best eight riders and reached the finals. The finals took place under floodlight illuminating the unique backdrop of Munich’s Olympic Park and the Olympic Lake. On the two rails of the 30-
stair set-up, Alex Tank impressed the crowd especially with his Frontside Blunt to Backside 180 Boardslide 270 out. „That’s just great!“, the German said chuffing about his place on the podium.

70 cubic metres of snow had been carried from the Kitzsteinhorn, Salzburg County, Austria, to Munich to make the event possible. Between the rail sessions, the Swedish DJ Kid Sid fired up the audience. 23 of the world’s best rail riders competed in the battle for the € 10,000 prize-purse and the wild card for the Crans-Montana Champs Open 2009. Especially in the finals, the snowboarders showed high-octane riding: “Apart from the three podium riders, I was also impressed by the Hungarian Baszi Takac with his technical Backside 180 to Switch Nosepress Slide over Tailpress and by the Pole Wojtek Pawlusiak with his Switch Blunt 270 to Switch 50/50 – that was actually hardcore riding!“, jury member Marc Swoboda said after the competition.

We don´t know who is the happiest person of this night, they all look really stoked! From left to right: Paradis, Helgason and Tank. Photo: Lorenz Holder.
