When: Sat 17th of January 2009
Where: LUZ ARDIDEN
bs 1 to switch 50-50 bs 1 out
We headed to the french part of the Pyrenees last Saturday for the 2nd stop of the European Peanut Butter and Rail Jam that. It took place in Luz Ardiden and once again we got lucky with the weather – fresh snow and clear skies. The contest took place at the snowpark where Jocelyn and Loic prepared a classic PBRJ set up consisting of a flat down rail, a down rail and a double kink. Most of the local rail killers signed up, making everyone excited to watch the show. There was alack of competitors in the 15 and under category due to a « federate » contest the same day in the area.
Local ripper Felix Cadiou, son of local legend Mickey (owner of Mickey snowboard shop), made a good move by signing up and warmed up and giving it his best. He charged the rails even if he had no challengers. The contest started once the tasty sausages prepared by our finest chefs started to smell and several Kung Fu masters began their show, defeating their opponents with some special secret kicks, even a 540 kick was spotted somewhere in the battlefield – Check out Youtube for 900 kicks to train on. Our young Shaolin student Felix qualified to the final battling with the masters ! Thomas « zamot » Sarrameda landed a supersmooth bs3 50-50 that won him the Gooeyest move of the day powered by Electric – 50 cash and some googles ! Also qualifying for the finals were Dennis Couchinave, Geoffrey Marcou, Jonathan, and local Wu Tang disciple Pierre Rué. Those guys killed it in the qualification heats and here is a couple of tricks that were witnessed by the judges (check out the movie for some more) : Double kink : fs board, Half cab 50-50 pretzel out, gap to bs lip, gap fs 270 fs board, 50-50 fs 360 out, Cab 270 in, etc Down rail : 50-50 to sw 50-50, 270’s « the hard way » in, bs540 « touch the rail », sw nosepress to fs nosepress , all kinds of reverts and pretzels out etc etc Flat down : all the gaps you can imagine, preferably « the hard way », plus some fun moves such as 50-50 180 nosebonk out, Bs and Sw bs 180 in etc
Some of them couldn’t land all their tricks in the final heat and humble padawan Benoit Alaphilipe found some extra power (redbull ?) to land serious hammers on every rail – He ended up in second place, while Thomas Sarrameda took the 3rd place. But it was Pierre Rué that was on fire all day and landed all his specials with an amazing flow and took 1st Place.
15 and under Felix ended in the top 5 scores of the finals and showed he deserved his spot at the European PBRJ Championships in Les Diablerets. In the Girls category nobody could defeat black belt Gore Serrano that won last year’s Spanish PBRJ stop, conquering every obstacle she crossed. A good day was finished with a giveaway shower and everyone went home with tons of prizes. Watch out for those shredders from the South at The Champs in Switzerland in April. Million thanks to everyone that help us throwing this contest, Luz Ardiden resort and staff, Jocelyn and Loic from the snowpark, judges Pierre Delerue, Ptipimousse and Pacome Allouis, People from Volcom SAS that went up that day helping and supporting us, Stephane from Shop 9, Mathias and Yohan from Kim multimedia for the movie and pics, Yannick and Sophie from Luz tourism office and our friends from the industry that helped us Electric , Nitro and Nixon . See you next stop in Italy, Slovenia or Sweden!
