What has gone down so far?
If you missed the qualification stages on Thursday, here’s a lightening quick recap of what went down:
- 24 female snowboarders, split over two heats dropped into the course and had two runs to post their best score.
- The top 4 highest scoring riders from each heat progressed straight to today’s finals (kicking off at 10.15 CET).
- Those 8 riders were: Anna Gasser, Jamie Anderson, Isabel Derungs, Elena Koenz, Torah Bright, Karly Shorr, Spencer O’Brien, Enni Rukajarvi and Sarka Pancochova.
You can read the full report here.
And what’s the deal with today’s semis?
The remaining 20 riders will battle it out right now over the course of two runs each for a further 4 spots in the finals. With only 4 spots available, competition will be fierce, so expect riders to be pulling out all their hammers in a bid to stay in the game (and the Games…).

Sam Oetiker: Welcome to our live coverage of the Sochi 2014 women’s slopestyle semi finals! We’ll be kicking off at 7.30 CET so be sure to tune in then!
Sam Oetiker: In the meantime, which 4 riders would you like to see advance to the finals from semis? Let us know by leaving a comment above!
Tom Copsey: Morning Sam. For me, I’d like to see Kjersti Buaas get through. She’s one of the most stylish girls around, plus would be great to see her bounce back from her horror slam the other day
Tom Copsey: Then I’d also be hyped if Jenny Jones got in – after smashing it for a few years she kinda took a bit of time out from competing, only to come back and qualify for this. So would like to see her do well.
Tom Copsey: Plus Cheryl Maas rips and has great gloves
Tom Copsey: So, who do you want to get through?
Tom Copsey: Or to mix things up, who would you like to win the whole shebang?
Sam Oetiker: I’d like to see Silje and Jenny make it through for sure
Sam Oetiker: Silje’s switch back 5 last hit at the X Games was delectable
Sam Oetiker: Personally I’d love it if Anna Gasser were to take the whole thing
Sam Oetiker: She went SO big in qualis
Comment From Hannah
Anna Gasser was so consistent on Thurs, landing everything, didn’t seem nervous and she’s got her famous cab underflip. Think she could be a good bet! I think a lot of it will come down to nerves..
Tom Copsey: The pressure thing could certainly work in Gasser’s favour
Yalda Walter: goood morning!
Yalda Walter: hell yeah, i’m gonna go with anna too
Tom Copsey: We are struggling with the internet here…
Comment From Hannah
And I think the nerves could work against Silje.. so much pressure on her!
Mike Brindley: Morning everyone!
Tom Copsey: Mike if you could let everyone know what’s happening that would be great. We’ve gone blind
Mike Brindley: Ty Walker first up – i believe she might manage a better score than in the first round. 1 isn’t exactly a tough target
Comment From Hannah
Ty Walker is about to drop first. There is rumour that Christy Prior took a big slam in practice and may not be riding. Ty is dropping now!
Mike Brindley: 67 with a Back 7 no grab
Mike Brindley: shelly gotlieb next – nice front board, switch 540, back 3 – huge laid out black flip – 63 points
Mike Brindley: Cheryl maas – gap to front board – back 1 melon – half cab- front 360 to aaaassss…
Mike Brindley: tidy style before she overcooked it though
Mike Brindley: 30.75
Mike Brindley: Woooor Aimee fuller in next
Mike Brindley: gap to 5050 – noseslide – front 1 of the cannon – cab underflip – goes for the double backflip!!!! and….. its no good
Mike Brindley: juuuuust didn’t quite have enough room to pull that undder
Sam Oetiker: I’ve found a stream!
Mike Brindley: Silje is up next!!
Sam Oetiker: A German one mind you…
Sam Oetiker: 33.75 from Fuller
Mike Brindley: blunt 270 out of the first rail 5050 – sketches out on the cannon – clips the knuckle on the first – she’s not liking this run…. and she’ll save it for run 2
Comment From Hannah
Knew nerves would get Silje!
Mike Brindley: Hannah called it…
Sam Oetiker: First blunt was switch!
Mike Brindley: sina candrian next to drop
Sam Oetiker: noseblunt, nosepress, 50 50 nose tail, front 3 indy, big back 3, front 7!
Sam Oetiker: Sick run there from Sina!
Mike Brindley: Ahh your back on the case now Sam!
Yalda Walter: that was impressive
Sam Oetiker: Great to get a solid run on the board and we’re sure Sina will step it up for the next one.
Sam Oetiker: Sina takes first place with that one
Tom Copsey: Having missed everything so far, is that good for what’[s gone on before? Guess so. Into 1st goes Sina
the guy in the background has an awesome beard
Mike Brindley: Yep – Sina’s was the first clean run
Sam Oetiker: Nice run from Jessika Jenson – cab 5, front 3, back 5
Sam Oetiker: Stefi Luxton going down on her first kicker hit there
Sam Oetiker: Jenna Blasman for Canada dropping!
Tom Copsey: Jenna used to be a speed skater. How about that
Tom Copsey: OH. MY. GOD.
Sam Oetiker: lip, 50 50 noseblunt, 50 50, front 3, back 3, OOOF! Goes way off axis final hit!
Yalda Walter: ouch
Tom Copsey: Thought Jenna was in BIG trouble there.
Sam Oetiker: Yep, thought she was going to fully eat it…
Cooler Magazine@coolermagphhhhewww no one likes a heel edge catch right before a kicker.. heart stopper.
Tom Copsey: Reminded me of Seb Toots at Beijing Air&Style a few years back. Got away with that, eh
Sam Oetiker: A lucky lady, that could have gone a LOT worse
glad, shes alright..
Mike Brindley: Possum won’t be too happy with that run..
Tom Copsey: Gap to lipslide, something, 5050 back 1 off, cab 5, front 3… and she’s out
Sam Oetiker: 50 50, 50 50, front board slip off, 50 50 back 1, cab 5, front 3, misses final kicker!
Tom Copsey: She was a bit all over the place most of the way through that
Sam Oetiker: yeah, rather sketchy indeed
Tom Copsey: Guess Christy Prior injured herself in training. Anyone confirm?
Sam Oetiker: Sarka Pancochova dropping! Gap 50 50, 50 50 front 1, cab 1 over doll, front 5 (super clean), sw back 1, massive back 7!
Comment From Joe
Might be a bit late here, but Christy has dropped out….
Tom Copsey: The shark just took a big bite out of this contest.
Sam Oetiker: Great run from Saka there!
Yalda Walter: that was smooth
Tom Copsey: Great style for the most part, and SENT it on the jumps
Sam Oetiker: Switch back 1 almost looked like it was going to turn into a sw back 3!
Mike Brindley: Jenny Jones next – she’s a bit shy so everyone look away
Tom Copsey: Wallop. Into first.
Mike Brindley: ‘absolutely woppertron’ did i just hear that right from Tim commentating on the BBC?
Yalda Walter: aw man i wanna watch the bbc stream. german tv announcers suck bigtime
Tom Copsey: Bloody hell. Go on Jones. That last front 3 almost landed in the Black Sea!
Sam Oetiker: Jenny’s run: 50 50, 50 front 1 to switch board, 50 front 1, cab 5, back 3, HUGE front 3
Mike Brindley: Maaaaassive run from Jenny the way!
Sam Oetiker: She can step up that final front 3 to a 7 as well
Sam Oetiker: Look out for that in run 2!
Tom Copsey: Is it just me or does it look like the top of the course needs grooming? Lot of wobbles on the snow between the jibs
Sam Oetiker: That’s it for first runs!
Sam Oetiker: Aaaand back to the top.
Yalda Walter: “alright we’re taking a short break, let’s talk about shaun white” seriously? still?
Tom Copsey: Yeah, these German commentators kind of blow
Mike Brindley: Is there not a drinking rule for every irrelevant mention of Shaun?
Sam Oetiker: There are some powerful jackets in the crowd…
LIVE OF THE PARTY RIGHT THERE! YOU GO VLADIMIR!
Yalda Walter: sam i think that the expression “powerful jacket” might the most beautiful thing i have heard all weekend
Tom Copsey: Shame Kjersti’s had to pull out too. Heal up quick, madame.
Comment From Jess
How did Shelly Gotlieb do?
Tom Copsey: She’ll have to do better if she wants to make the finals.
Sam Oetiker: So standings so far: Sarka first, Sina second, Jenny third, Jessika fourth
Sam Oetiker: Remember that it’s the top 4 riders who advance to finals later today
Sam Oetiker: Bit of a re-shape going down right now
Tom Copsey: Why do the groomers have dresses on?
Comment From Guest
Hang on, did Jessika Jenson get scored for defying physics and death?!?!
Tom Copsey: Wasnt that Jenna Blasman?
