qualification for the 2014 Sochi winter Olympics snowboard slopestyle

Welcome to Onboard’s live blog of the Sochi 2014 Women’s Olympic slopestyle qualifiers. We’ll be reporting on all of the action as it happens run by run and will be kicking things off here at 11am CET.

Here’s how competitors can qualify for slopestyle finals:

  • The 23 female snowboarders have been randomly divided into two heats.
  • In each heat, the top 4 riders will progress straight to Sunday’s (women’s) finals.
  • The rest of the riders will battle it out for 4 remaining finals spots in the semi finals event that will happen before the finals on Sunday.
  • No riders will actually be eliminated today but everyone will be after a top 4 finish so that they can skip semi finals without having to battle it out for the remaining 4 spots.

Head here for a video preview of the course.

You can get involved in the live blog below by leaving a comment or hitting us up on twitter @onboardmag.

Here is the full live blog copied out in plain text (check it out with above for a better experience with tweets/images/comments though):

10:54

Sam Oetiker: Tune in at 11am CET right here for live coverage of the women’s slopestyle qualifiers!

10:57

Tom Copsey: Oh, hi world!

10:58

Tom Copsey: JENNY JONES to drop first. Wallop!

11:01

Sam Oetiker: Decent safety run from Jenny Jones with a cab 540, backside 360 and frontside 360 to start things off

11:01

Tom Copsey: Safety run from the Jones. Took on all the big booters though. Is that experience riding?

11:01

Tom Copsey: 74.25 for Jenny Jones

11:03

Sam Oetiker: Here we go, Kjersti Buaas kicking off her first run with a 50 50, 50 50, 50 50 backside 180 out to… oh dear Kjesti: that’s what you have a second run for we guess!

11:05

Sam Oetiker: Next up, Sina Candrain, a goofy rider from Switzerland. Sina famously stomped the first falt spun 1080 in Laax a while back. She starts her run off with a gap to 50 50, 50 50 to baordslide, 50 nosegrab-tailgrab sick), fronstide 360, backside 360 no grab, frontside 720 to revert

11:05

Tom Copsey: I would like to date Sina Candrian’s first front 3.. That’s all.

11:05

Sam Oetiker: It was rather sexeh indeed

11:06

Mike Brindley: Spencer O’brien dropping now!

11:07

Comment From Guest

very rare

Tom Copsey: Like steak haché?

11:07

Sam Oetiker: Canuck Spencer O’Brien just put down a SICK first run: boardslide, 50 50, 50 50 backside 180, switch backside 540 (silky smooth btw), frontside 360 indy, backside 540

11:07

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Spencer got the killer flat spins, top 4 predicition

Tom Copsey: No doubt

11:07

Sam Oetiker: Spencer is surely one of the favourites here today

11:08

Sam Oetiker: Isabel Derungs is up next…

11:08

Mike Brindley: Swiss Isabel Derungs going tech on the rails right now.

11:10

Sam Oetiker: Fresh off a win at the Burton European Open, Isabel must be hoping for a solid first run here. She starts off with a boardslide to fakie, fakie boardslide, back 1 off the cannon, switch back 5, backside 360, and finishing off with a backside rodeo

11:10

Tom Copsey: To anyone wanting to watch live, have a google. There’s a bunch of national stations doing it, plus some more nefarious live stream sites…

11:12

Sam Oetiker: Kiwi Christy Prior is up, she only started snowboarding when she was 17! Her run was: 50-50, switch boardslide to regs, 50-50, backside 1 off the cannon, cab underflip, backflip, backside 540

11:12

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Christy not reallllly stepping up to her video party hype…

11:12

Tom Copsey: Christy Prior has firey legy.

11:12

Tom Copsey: legs

11:13

Tom Copsey: Aimee Fuller. 5050, nose slide-ish, 5050 front 180 out, cab underflip, backflip to revert, straight air suitcasing it for all the world travellers

11:14

Sam Oetiker: plus a double claim to finish things off

11:14

Tom Copsey: 44.5 for Fuller

11:14

Mike Brindley: Fin Enni Rukajarvi is next to drop

11:15

Comment From Guest

thanks tom

Tom Copsey: no probs

11:16

Sam Oetiker: Enni Rukajarvi from Finland just put down a rad run, our Finnish editor Sami is probably losing his shit right now… Her run included a gap to 50 50, gap to 50 50, 50 50 to indy, frontside 360 with amazing style, backside 540 bolts, cab 540

11:16

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

With the women being all pretty matched on the booters, perhaps it’ll come down to the rail section for the win?

Sam Oetiker: An interesting point, we think it’ll come down to amplitude and spinning more than a 540. But we guess they’ll all be stepping it up in run 2

11:16

Tom Copsey: All the girls tackling that unisex tee… none have opted for the smaller jumps so far, which is pretty rad to see

11:18

Tom Copsey: Well, that’s me told…

11:18

Mike Brindley: No sooner than you’d said it..

11:18

Sam Oetiker: Stefi Luxton opts for the small side of the kickers with a bunch of 50 50s up top, frontside 180 over the cannon, cab 540, backside 360 and frontside 360

11:18

Sam Oetiker: It was clean, but surely she’ll be marked down for hitting the small jumps

11:19

Tom Copsey: Cavanagh might be right – I’m watching this this through someone’s voicebox, which is quite odd..

11:19

Sam Oetiker: Possum Tor up next, also from Kiwi-land

11:19

Comment From Hannah

Lots of 5′s so far… but we reckon it’ll be 7′s and could there even be a 9 (Jamie!) for run 2!

11:19

11:20

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

I think Christy went off the the smaller hit Tom…

Tom Copsey: There’s every chance that you’re right. Watching with one’s ears is interesting…

11:20

Sam Oetiker: Possum just landed a nice run – it was filled with lots of 50 50s in the rail section, a backside 360 mute, frontside 360 mute and backside 720 no grab

11:20

Sam Oetiker: The girls need to start stepping up their rail game to stand out from the crowd

11:21

Mike Brindley: Torah Bright’s back 3 was a beaut!

11:22

Tom Copsey: If judges have any idea, Torah should be smiling right now

11:22

Sam Oetiker: Another Antipodean up now. Olympic halfpipe medalist from 2010 Torah Bright! She puts down a gap to backlip, nosegrab, boardslide to fakie, fakie 50 50, cab 5, back 3 (deep!), front 360

11:23

Sam Oetiker: Remember that Torah is competing in slope, pipe AND boardercross at the Sochi 2014 Olympics

11:23

Tom Copsey: Wallop. 1st place for Torah ‘I do 3 Olympic events’ Bright.

11:23

Mike Brindley: Shelly Gotlieb for New Zealand..

11:24

Mike Brindley: Tech tech. Bringing in the handrail on the side of the 1st feature – more like this please!

11:25

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Killer rail game!

11:25

Tom Copsey: Shelly Gotlieb is up. 5050 through the kink, ollie, front board, front 1 over the canon and loooooses speeeeeed… (sad face)

11:25

Sam Oetiker: That’s the end of the first runs, back to the top!

11:26

Sam Oetiker: So currently, we have Enni in 4th, Isabel in 3rd, Spencer in 2nd and Torah in 1st

11:27

Mike Brindley: And Jenny Jones will be taking her first run score after sketching the landing out of the rocket rail.

11:27

Sam Oetiker: No Jenny Jones! Having some difficulty in the rail section and she’ll have to wait for semi finals for a chance at redemption

11:28

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

When are gonna see the miller filps over the ‘transistor’ bonk?

Tom Copsey: One bloke did one… think it was Niklas Mattsson…

11:28

Sam Oetiker: With multiple X Games gold medals, Jenny Jones is a veteran and we’re sure she’ll be stepping up her game in semis

11:29

Mike Brindley: Ouch Kjersti Buass is down..

11:29

Sam Oetiker: OOF!

11:29

Sam Oetiker: That looked nasty

11:29

Yalda Walter: ohmygawd

11:30

Sam Oetiker: Kjersti just took a HUGE slam to the face

11:30

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Kjersti is a Bauss though, she’ll be ready to send it in the semi’s

11:30

Sam Oetiker: She’s up! Looks like she’s ok. That was one heck of a slam though

11:30

Sam Oetiker: And by ok, we mean not dead

11:30

Tom Copsey: Do they have doctors in Sochi?

11:31

Tom Copsey: Ahh, there’s someone seeing if she’s alright at least

11:31

Yalda Walter: i’m sure they have docotrs but i don’t think they’re done building the hospital

11:31

Mike Brindley: I think so – although from what ive seen they probably shouldn’t wash any wounds – yellow water looks pretty filthy

11:32

Tom Copsey: That Kjersti back 1 off the Nicholls rail was looking so sweet. She Just overcooked it a bit

11:33

Tom Copsey: If anyone can bring snus to Auenstrasse 100, Munich, I will give them a snowboard. That is a FACT

11:33

Sam Oetiker: I’d love another beer actually. Beer > breakfast

11:34

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

If anyone can bring snus to East Austria, I’ll give them two snowboards…

11:35

Yalda Walter: tom are you giving away the snowboard you promised me? go stick to your caramel electric cigarette!

11:35

Sam Oetiker: Ok, so Swiss ripper Sina Candrian’s up again! She goes with a gap to 50 50, gap to 50 50, 50 50 nose tailgrab (just missed the tailgrab though!) front 3 poked out to shit, backside 360, frontside 7 to knuckle.

11:36

Comment From Guest

How can I watch the men’s qualifiers?

Tom Copsey: Wake up earlier, or check our tappings from it here – http://onboardmag.com/snowboarding-events/other-snowboarding-events/sochi-2014-live-blog-mens-slopestyle-qualification.html

11:36

Sam Oetiker: Spencer is dropping again. This girl rips pretty damn hard

11:36

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

TOES!

11:37

Sam Oetiker: Super good run from Spencer! Gap to boardslide, gap to boardslide, 50 50, 50 180 off, switch back 5, front 7 off the toes, back 5

11:37

Tom Copsey: TOES! from Spenny!

11:37

Sam Oetiker: That front 7 off the toes was SO sick

11:38

Tom Copsey: 65 for Spencer O’Brien

11:38

Sam Oetiker: Not quiiite clean enough I guess

11:38

Mike Brindley: Looks like we’re getting more variety in the rails too this round.

11:38

Mike Brindley: Isabel Derungs back rodeo just killed me…

11:39

Sam Oetiker: YES Derungs! Boardslide fakie, fakie board, 50 50, 50 50 back 180, switch back 5, backside 720, backside rodeo

11:39

Tom Copsey: Isabel Derungs just bossed it.

11:39

Sam Oetiker: Yep, fully stepped up from her first run

11:40

Tom Copsey: 87.5 and into first for Isabel.

11:40

Sam Oetiker: Christy Prior up next

11:41

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Lovely little tweak on the robo-cannon rail

11:41

Comment From Hannah

we wanted to see more on the rails from Christy!

11:42

Sam Oetiker: Yep, nice tech rail section with 180s off, cab 5 underflip, wildcat and a back 5 with a shit-ton of poke!

11:42

Sam Oetiker: But yes, she has so much more to give on the jibs

11:42

Tom Copsey: I would also like to date Christy Prior’s back 5. Pokey and styley

11:44

Sam Oetiker: Aimee Fuller dropping for Great Britain! Gap to 50 50, noseslide, cannon front 180, cab underflip, laid out backflip to 360 revert…

11:44

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

It;s the only poking you’ll get out of her Tom…

Tom Copsey: She’ll have to do better to be the future ex mras me

11:45

Sam Oetiker: Remember that Aimee Fuller has a double backflip up her sleeve…

11:46

Sam Oetiker: OUCH. Enni Rukajarvi just took a heavy slam, bouncing off the knuckle on a front 3 attempt

11:46

Sam Oetiker: Good job she didn’t knee herself in the noggin there…

11:47

Comment From Geiri

Take the beers of Tom before he starts dating anymore tricks

Yalda Walter: that just almost happened, never saw tom run that fast

Tom Copsey: Some German fella just tried. I chased him down the hall

11:48

Sam Oetiker: Steffi Luxton just put down a 50 50, tailpress, front 1, cab 5, backside 360 and frontside 540 – all off the smaller kickers

11:49

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Messy rail section from luxton

11:49

Comment From wess

aimeee is gonna put that double back down in the semi finals trust me !

Tom Copsey: €5

11:50

Sam Oetiker: Possum Tor couldn’t quite stick her second run – gap to 50 50, 50 50, gap to back lip, 50 50 tailgrab, backside 360 no grab, frontside 360 and backside 720 to ass check

11:50

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Bit disappointed that there’s no cable cam. Did Putin max out the credit card on large novelty russian dolls?

11:51

Comment From Tina

where’s Anna Gasser ?!??!

Yalda Walter: second run

11:52

Tom Copsey: Torah Bright. Gap to 5050. 5050 front 1 out. Switch 5050 to straight air. Switch back 180, back 3 Indy clean. MAAAAASIVE front 3 with proper Torah Bright tweak. First, again?

11:52

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

‘Straya! That poke almost broke my screen

11:53

Sam Oetiker: I don’t think that was enough to beat Spenny to be honest

11:53

Sam Oetiker: That poke was ridiculous though

11:53

Tom Copsey: 80.00 for Torah’s second run

11:53

Sam Oetiker: She knows a thing or two about style does that Torah

11:54

Tom Copsey: Shelly Gotlieb. 5050 on the DFD, front board, front 1 over canon, cab 9 attempt but she got lost on the way to the landing…

11:55

Sam Oetiker: That down flat down is a creeper rail too! Way harder than it looks

11:55

Sam Oetiker: If that cab 9 is any indication of what we’ll see in finals we’re excited…

11:56

Mike Brindley: Having said there’s been some mighty fine slow spins on these kickers…

11:56

Comment From Japandrew

Watching on feed with a bit of time lag from Japan… it’s like you guys can see the future.

Tom Copsey: We can see the future. Bright, O’Brian, Enni all in the final, but Isabel Derungs getting in first is really interesting

11:57

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

If Spencer brings up her rail game to Torah, I think we’re onto a winner. Was super impressed by her attitude at the WSC in 2012 as well…

Tom Copsey: Yes, but what about Derungs? Looking strong

11:57

Sam Oetiker: So, straight though to finals from heat 1 are Isabel Derungs, Torah Bright, Spencer O’Brien and Enni Rukajarvi

12:00

Mike Brindley: Anna Gasser, SIlje Norendal, Jamie Anderson, Cheryl Maas still to come in heat two… stoked

12:00

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Derungs obviously coming in hot from Pleasure Jam and BEO, but Spencer’s still got a lot more in the bag. I feel like Isabel relies on her rodeo to push her through…

12:00

Tom Copsey: And then there’s Jamie Anderson…

12:01

Sam Oetiker: Will Gasser be chucking her double?

Tom Copsey: €5 if she does in this round…

12:03

What did you make of the judging in the men’s slopestyle qualifiers earlier?

On point

( 15% )

Shit

( 31% )

Could have been better

( 54% )

12:10

Sam Oetiker: So heat 2 of the women’s qualifiers will be coming up in just a moment!

12:10

Mike Brindley: Are you just going to hand out said fivers at random Copsey?

12:12

Sam Oetiker: YES! We now have more beer and sweet chilli potato chips. All set for heat 2.

12:12

Sam Oetiker: Who are YOU rooting for?

12:13

Comment From Guest

Maas and Gasser.

Comment From Tina

Gasser !!!

12:14

Comment From braderick

GASSER!

12:15

Comment From Japandrew

Most impressibe thing on my flickering feed via phone was Kjersti’s slam. That was not at all gay. Putin will be stoked.

Sam Oetiker: Damn straight. That was straight up gnarly.

12:16

Sam Oetiker: So lots of people have got Gasser’s back then we see! She’s certainly got a decent chance we think.

12:16

Sam Oetiker: I just want to see Silje do one of her front 7s off the toes. They’re beautiful they are.

12:20

Sam Oetiker: Sorry for the delay here folks, we’re not 100% sure when the second heats are kicking off

12:20

Sam Oetiker: Shouldn’t be too much longer

12:20

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

I think Panka and Merika Enne are DNS’s for heat two

12:40

Mike Brindley: Should be back on track with heat 2 in 15 minutes

12:43

so many drinking games

12:50

Tom Copsey: 6 minutes till round 2 of the women’s slopestye gets underway

12:51

Tom Copsey: Does anyone have a problem with us using SS as an abbreviation for slopestyle?

12:54

Comment From Guest

yes I am jewish

Tom Copsey: ok, guest

12:54

so after waiting for hours (maybe not) we’re on for the second heat

12:55

Tom Copsey: Here goes the the women’s round 2 of the SS(tyle) to not offend anyone

12:55

Sam Oetiker: Heavy line up of riders for heat two. We’ll be watching Anna Gasser, Silje Norendal and Jamie Anderson particularly closely

12:56

Yalda Walter: GO ANNA! AUSTRIA! SCHNITZEL!

12:56

Mike Brindley: Best run we’ve seen all day going down right now!!!!

12:56

Tom Copsey: Calm down everyone

12:57

Sam Oetiker: Ty Walker is up first for the ladies in heat 2

12:57

Tom Copsey: Ty is a gril from New York City she’s got 16 years and… AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGHHH MY EAAARS

12:57

Mike Brindley: Ty Walker opts not to actually do anything on her run -possibly injury

12:57

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Ty firing it through with a perfect 1

12:58

Sam Oetiker: Ok then…

12:58

Tom Copsey: 1.0 for ty

12:58

Sam Oetiker: It was a beaut of a knuckle ollie

12:59

Tom Copsey: Hope Ty’s run was a statement, or she’s hurt or lost the plot…

1:00

Sam Oetiker: Anna just put down a crazy good first run: 50-50, 50-50 180, half cab bordslide, backside 1, cab underflip, which was MASSIVE, front 360, backside 360

1:00

Mike Brindley: Maybe that was the silent protest we’ve been waiting for…

1:00

Tom Copsey: Anna GASSER that was

1:01

Comment From jeffblipsqueek

haha :P win on the “how to survive” xD

1:02

Sam Oetiker: Silje Norendal is up next. The dudes in attendance are watching intently… She starts off with a beautiful gap boardslide 270, 50-50, 50-50, front 3 and big backside 5 but over-rotates and sits down in the landing

1:02

Tom Copsey: 31 for Silje? Can I have some of that crack please?

Tom Copsey: Oh, I’m on crack already. Missed Silje’s sit down. damn

1:03

sarka droppin

1:03

Sam Oetiker: Jenna Blasman from Canada up next: gap to boardslide, 50-50, bluntslide, cannon 50 50, frontside 360, backside 360 tail, straight air

1:04

Sam Oetiker: Somehow we don’t think that straight air’s gonna cut it

1:05

Tom Copsey: Sarka should be first now

1:05

Mike Brindley: Not for long (im a bit ahead of you lot…)

1:05

Sam Oetiker: Sarka Panchochova put down a sick run on the small side including a frontside 540, cab 540 and backside 720

1:06

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

If there’s anything we can learn from Ty, it’s that we’re all able to ride in the Olympics…

1:06

Tom Copsey: Jamie Anderson. Businiess time.

1:06

JAMIE IN FIRST PLACE

1:07

Tom Copsey: Gap to noseslide, 505 180 out, 5050 bs 1 off canon, sw back 5 maaaaasive, bs 5 maaaaaasive, cab 5 First or judges are on heroin

1:08

Sam Oetiker: That run was CHUNKY

1:08

Tom Copsey: I think that’s called a ‘statement of intent’

1:09

Sam Oetiker: Cheryl Maas goes for a backside 720 over the doll bonk feature but can’t quite stick it

1:10

Sam Oetiker: She’ll be hoping to improve in run 2

1:11

Tom Copsey: Nice run there from the Swiss girl, Elena. Koenz.

1:11

Sam Oetiker: Her backside 180 was soo stylish

1:12

Tom Copsey: Here’s George Bush…

1:12

Sam Oetiker: Merika took a MONSTER slam in practice

1:12

Tom Copsey: Sorry, thought it was ‘Merica

1:13

Sam Oetiker: Aplogies if we’re starting to lag here… we’ve been sat here since 6.30am and are currently running on beer and potato chips

1:14

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Do you think they get extra points for grabbing off the rails….?

Sam Oetiker: Good question. I guess so?

1:15

Sam Oetiker: Karly Schorr was looking super promising with a gap to boardslide, 50-50, boardslide, 50-50 backside 180, sw back 5 and backside 360 but goes down on her final frontside 360.

1:16

Tom Copsey: 45 points for Karly Shorr

1:17

Tom Copsey: Jessika Kensen aka Jessie J. Boardslide zeach, noseblunt, 5050 back 1 off the canon, cab 5, front 3 to penguin, ooooooh Get your catsuit on for the next run

1:17

Comment From Guest

They (nearly) all seem really nervous on the jumps

Sam Oetiker: Agreed. Hopefully they’ll have settled into it by the time finals roll around.

1:17

1:20

Sam Oetiker: Anna Gasser jsut sent it DEEP: sick rail section into a MASSIVE cab underflip, frontside 720 and backside 360

1:20

“sneaking in to first suckerssss”

1:21

Sam Oetiker: She scores a whopping 95.5 which will be damn hard to beat.

1:23

Sam Oetiker: Jenna Blasman can’t quite stick her second run so she’ll be running with her first run score.

1:23

Tom Copsey: Sarka looking sharky…

1:23

scoring a perfect 100 when it comes to style

1:24

Tom Copsey: Gap to 5050, 5050 180 out, cab 1 tooo… give up. Methods are rad. Thanks Sarka

1:24

Comment From Tina

omg HELL YES Austria is back in the game !!!

Sam Oetiker: Yep, Anna killed it!

Yalda Walter: go anna!!!

1:26

Sam Oetiker: Cheryl Maas is up with her 2nd run. She went for: gap to front board, 50-50, boardslide, backside 180 over the bonk feature, switch backside 180 nice ‘n’ deep but then sat down on her frontside 360. She went too big!

1:26

Sam Oetiker: Hard luck Cheryl!

1:28

Sam Oetiker: Swiss rider Elena Koenz is dropping now and put down a gap to boardslide, 50 50, boardslide, 50 50 front 1 off the cannon, sw back 1 melon and big front 7 but lands a little heel heavy and can’t stick it.

1:28

Sam Oetiker: She’s still comfortably in third place though

1:29

Mike Brindley: No second run coming from Anderson – tactical move possibly?

1:29

Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Disappointing to see some of them not taking the second run…

1:30

Tom Copsey: Karly Shorr is up. gap to boardslide, 5050 boardslide, 5050 back 1 out, switch back 5, back 3 flailed, front 3

1:31

Sam Oetiker: It was a good run, if not a little scrappy

1:31

Sam Oetiker: And how BIG does that last kicker look from that aerial angle?

1:32

Sam Oetiker: Wow, Karly just got posted a really good score of 84.75 for 4th place

1:33

Comment From chachachase

mfw I do not have somewhere to live stream from

Yalda Walter: oh wow thats beautiful
