Sochi 2014 Live Blog - Men's Slopestyle Semi Finals

Sochi - Slopestyle-Live-Blog-Men's-Semi-Finals-

Welcome to our live coverage of the Sochi 2014 men’s slopestyle semi finals! We’ll be reporting on the semis as they happen with run-by-run analyses, failed attempts at being funny and other cool shit in our live blog below. Tune in, or well, don’t.

Scroll down to find the live blog!

What has gone down so far?

If you missed the qualification stages on Thursday, here’s a lightening quick recap of what went down:

  • 29 male snowboarders, split over two heats dropped into the course and had two runs to post their best score.
  • The top 4 highest scoring riders from each heat progressed straight to today’s finals (kicking off at 9.45 CET).
  • Those 8 riders were: Max Parrot, Roope Tonteri, Stale Sandbech, Sven Thorgren, Gjermund Braaten, Peetu Piiroinen, Sebastien Toutant and Jamie Nicholls.

You can read the full report here.

And what’s the deal with today’s semis?

The remaining 21 riders will battle it out right now over the course of two runs each for a further 4 spots in the finals. With only 4 spots available, competition will be fierce, so expect riders to be pulling out all their hammers in a bid to stay in the game (and the Games). There will be triple corks and a lot of hucking, probably with mute/indy grabs… we will do our very best to keep up with the commentary.

Mark McMorris / Photo: Nick Atkins

Who to look out for in the semi finals:

Mark McMorris was the victim of some rather unpredictable judging in Thursday’s qualifiers, after stomping a near flawless run (which included a legit triple cork) and only scored enough for 7th place. Mark has been long regarded one of the favourites to win slopestyle and will certainly be looking to snag one of those four spots. It’s perhaps worth bearing in mind that he’s currently riding with a broken rib.

Billy Morgan who dropped first in qualis was also judged harshly in our opinion, and has back to back triple corks in his repertoire. We’ll have to wait and see whether we see them or not today.

Chas Guldemond and Seppe Smits both have bags of experience competing at a high level and we’d exepect them to do well tomorrow. Keep an eye out for Sage Kotsenburg for some amazing tweaked grabs and a truly individual style. We’d be stoked to see him make finals.

Top of the morning to you and greetings from Icelandic National TV

Tom Copsey: Hello, Iceland!
6:24

Tom Copsey: Geiri, in lieu of nothing else happening, would you care to explain how you pronounce the name of your volcano that farted a few years back and wreaked havoc on the world’s airtravel?

Do you know the heats yet for Semi’s?

Tom Copsey: Riders are above – think they all go in one big heat, but we’re trying to find out for sure
6:27

Tom Copsey: Russian stream. LIVE. BBC stream LIVE
6:28
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
Team Sweden are sponsored by H&M? Who knew?!?
6:28

Tom Copsey: That means we’re 5 mins away from business time
6:28

Tom Copsey: or that should rather be semi business time
6:31

Tom Copsey: Torgeir up first. Cab 270 front board, back blunt 270, front 3 missed the tap, front 12, cab 10 to revert…
6:32

Sam Oetiker: Unlucky first run from Torgeir
6:33
Comment From Jacqueline
Best live Sochi blog out there, thanks guys!

Sam Oetiker: Why thank you!
6:33

Tom Copsey: Mathias Weissenbacher up now. Throwaway run from the Austrian right there. But according to the TTR, Matthias lives in a place called Radstadt, which is pretty rad if he’s not been pulling their plonkers
6:34

Yalda Walter: HOT COOL YOURS GUYS!
6:34

Tom Copsey: Seamus O’Connor. Gap back lip, 5050 front 1 revert to back lip, front 3 over the doll, double backie, back 10 dub stomped, front double 9, landed. Decent from the adopted Irishman.
6:35

Sam Oetiker: That was a nice clean run from Seamus!
6:35

Yalda Walter: still way too green seamus..
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
Team Sweden are sponsored by H&M? Who knew?!?
6:35

Tom Copsey: 60.75, to be sure
6:36

Sam Oetiker: Yuki Kadono is up next. He goes for: cab 270 to fakie, switch boardslide, front blunt 270, front 5 nosetap, cab 12 double, front 10, backside 1260!
6:37
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
Just show me the tuck knee Torgeir
6:37

Tom Copsey: That was pretty clean from Yuki. Should get an indication of how the judges might be scoring from what he gets here… unless they’re on their meds again.
6:38

Tom Copsey: 84.75 for Yuki
6:39

Tom Copsey: Janne Korpi… takes the rails kinda mellow but scrubs out on the back 12.
6:39
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
Bit low for Yuki….
6:40

Tom Copsey: Lucien Koch from der Schweiz. Hardway fron 270 on, 5050 front 3, backside woooooooorrrrrrgghh. He does down.
6:41
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
And another one bites the dust…
6:42
Comment From Samantha Rose
I will give up my first born child if Mark can pull out gold. I may be Team USA, but I am rooting for the kid. Quals aside, I really wanted to see him and Shaun go head to head in this competition. Has he made his run yet?

Yalda Walter: don’t give up anyone’s first born, seriously..
6:42

Tom Copsey: Finland’s Ville Paumola is on course. Back lip, 5050 to front blunt 270, front 180 switch back 3 off, switch back 12 reverts the landing and will have to go all in for his second run
6:42
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
I’ll give up my first born to see Mark not take the gold….
6:43

Tom Copsey: Stop it with the child sacrificing everyone…
6:44

Sam Oetiker: So Scotty James is up next, he lands a: gap to front board, bonk, 50 50 on the rainbow to fs 360 out, frontside 180 melon, cab dub 9, front 10 MASSIVE, backside 1440. He is VERY happy with himself.
6:45
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
I’ll give up Oetiker to see Mark’s sad ‘I didn’t win’ face

Sam Oetiker: Thanks Joe
6:45

Tom Copsey: Scotty looked well jolly with that. 77.25. Probably not so jolly now
6:45
Comment From nick apicella

6:45
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
It’s a pretty good face…
6:46

Sam Oetiker: Jan Scherrer up next! Frontside 270 on, backside 360, 50-50 slip off, back 5 nosebonk, front 10, back 12, switch back 10 double
6:46

Tom Copsey: Betting Jan gets scored down good and proper for coming off that rail early
6:47
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
Jan looked like he was taking a leaf out of the speed skating with that tuck inbetween the kickers…
6:47

Tom Copsey: 64.25 for Jan
6:47

Sam Oetiker: His kickers were solid though
6:48
Comment From Samantha Rose
Out of civil curiosity, who is everyone looking to place?
6:48
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
Show me your backie!
6:49

Sam Oetiker: Alexey had some people wondering if he was supporting pussy riot due to the balaclava wearing woman on his topsheet…
6:49

Tom Copsey: Front blunt 270, 5050 180 out, backflip, back 7 to arse.. and that’s that for Russian Alexey Sobolev, whose Stepchild board graphic has been causing quite a kerfuffle for having a bird in a ski mask on it. Pussy Riot support? Turns out not…
6:49

Tom Copsey: http://stepchildsnowboards.com/stepchild-causing-controversy-at-the-olympics-what-else-do-you-expect/
6:51

Sam Oetiker: Ryan Stassel dropping! back 270 on 270 out, boarslide fakie, front board 270 out, front 5 tap, cab double 10, switch back 12, back 12
6:52

Sam Oetiker: That last back 12 was stratospheric!
6:52

Tom Copsey: HOLY SHIT. Ryan Stassel just SENT that back 12 to the K-point. That’s called ‘doing a Piiroinen’
6:52
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
Stassel placed pretty well at the WSC, interested to see what he can pull out the bag
6:52

Sam Oetiker: that has to be first place
6:52

Tom Copsey: 83.25 points for Ryan
6:53

Tom Copsey: Charles Reid was doing alright there, some sketchy rails aside, till the end, where he arsed out. Throw that one in the bin
6:54

Sam Oetiker: Unlucky for Charles. That looks like a promising run if he can stick it.
6:54

Tom Copsey: Reid has burst a buttock or something
6:54

Sam Oetiker: We hope your Reiding this live blog!
6:55

Tom Copsey: Hope he’s alright to do round 2. Commentators reckoned he was carrying an injury
6:55

Sam Oetiker: We think Sage is up next… come on Sage!
6:57

Tom Copsey: Look! Someone who doesn’t ride like a robot! Yes Sage!
6:57

Sam Oetiker: Sage’s run: cab 270 to fakie, cab 180-360 off, double hand drag thingy to back 1 out off the cannon, cab double 12 japan, front 10 nose? back 10 double stomped
6:57

Sam Oetiker: That layback on the rail was so sick!
6:57

Tom Copsey: That tripod to back 1 off the canon… so sick
6:57
Comment From Samantha Rose
Gorgeous hand grab.
6:59

Tom Copsey: EAU aka Emil Andre Ulsletten. Lipslide to regs, front blunt 270, front board fakie, cab 1 on back 3 off the canon, back 1080 to buttcheck
6:59

Sam Oetiker: Sage is in first after that run! The judges are actually rewarding the extra difficulty of his grabs, that’s good to see.
7:00

Tom Copsey: McMorris aka McRobbed. Cab 270 board, front blunt 270, back 5, cab DEAD STREAM
7:01
Comment From Joe Cavanagh
Could FIS be about to pull the zinger of the century on the TTR by rewarding more difficult grabs?

Has someone told Terje??!!
7:01

Sam Oetiker: Why does our stream always die on McMozza?
7:01

Tom Copsey: Not just the judges who have it in for McMorris it seems. The internet hates him too.
7:02
Comment From Samantha Rose
He fell on the triple. Not a lot, but dragged it. Made a recovery, but it wasn’t perfect.

Sam Oetiker: Thanks Samantha! We totally missed that one
7:02

Tom Copsey: 55.5 for McMorris. Musta gone down
7:02

Tom Copsey: Cheers for the update Samantha
7:03

Comment From Jaakko
McMo is feeling the pressure..
7:04

Yalda Walter: alright it’s schnitzel power
7:04

Tom Copsey: Niklas Matsson. Swedish. Amazing profile pic. Switch front board. Swithc miller flip, back blunt 270, something with a 450 off, back 10 double, front 10, sits down on the last hit. Tech up top but needs to pull it together now for his last run
7:06
Comment From Jaakko

Sam Oetiker: (can you tell i’m British?)
7:10

Tom Copsey: Jarkko, you made our online editor sad with that comment. The judges just made him happy tho. Billy goes into first with 90.75
7:11

Tom Copsey: Seppe Smits. Back blunt 270, back 270 on, front 5, sw back 10, cab 12, back 12. Think he’ll need to clean that up a tad

Sam Oetiker: Yalda came straight from the party last night…
7:16
Comment From Jaakko
Sorry to hear, but McMo did the same doubleshittyunderflip in his run that was robbed by judges…i feel judges when they rob runs with tricks like that. Still rooting for euros, so brits > cans/yankees fo sho.
7:17

Tom Copsey: Sorry for spelling your name wrong btw Jaakko. Early here…
7:19

Tom Copsey: BIG second runs coming up. We’re reckoning a lot of dudes will be going all in. Will Billy Morgan hang on to top spot? We shall see…
7:20
Comment From Jaakko
Same here, greets from fin. Still hoping that laid-back Paumola would land his run. Said in interview that jumps are in shade that it’s difficult for many riders to time popping

Tom Copsey: Paumola’s so smooth. Hope he pulls it together this round
7:20

Sam Oetiker: After a short break, it looks like they’re getting ready at the top. Torgeir Bergrem up next.
7:22

Sam Oetiker: His run: cab 270, boardslide fakie, switch boardslide 270, front 3 tap on doll, cab 12 sent deep, frontside 10 to nose butter! And he’s done. Sadly, Torgeir will not be making the finals
7:22

Tom Copsey: Thanks for the knuckle Methods, Torgeir. Enjoy the pow.
7:22

Sam Oetiker: He still looks stoked to be here though
7:22

7:28

Sam Oetiker: That was a solid run from Yuki, but bit of a hand drag on that final triple

Tom Copsey: Double, tho
7:29
Comment From Jaakko
Yuki should go waaay much bigger.
7:29

Sam Oetiker: I don’t think that will challenge Billy’s run
7:29

Tom Copsey: 80.50 for Yuki
7:31

Sam Oetiker: Janne Korpi from Finland up next! Cab 270, switch board to forward, front 180 to slip off, boardslide 270 off, front 10, back 12, cab 10

7:31
Comment From Joe Cavanagh

Tom Copsey: Not really
7:33

Tom Copsey: Lucien Koch up. Front 270 on, 5050 front 3, back 3 over the doll. Back 12 double handdrag… and that’ll be that for the young buck from Switzerland. He comes from a town called Grabs though, which is nice

Tom Copsey: Didn’t see that. Don’t make Sam sad, now
7:35

Sam Oetiker: Scotty James up next. if you google his name the suggested search is ‘Scotty James Snowboarder Height’… which is a bit strange
7:35

Tom Copsey: 25.25 for Paumola. Kiitos boss.
7:36

Sam Oetiker: Scotty’s run: gap front board zeach, back 3 over, missed rail, front 5 sits down… that’s it for Scotty. Go get the barbie on mate!
