Sochi-Slopestyle-Mens-Finals-Live-Blog
Welcome to our live coverage of the Sochi 2014 men’s slopestyle finals! We’ll be reporting on all the action as it happens with run-by-run analyses, failed attempts at being funny and other cool shit in our live blog below. Tune in, or well, don’t.

Here’s some background waffle:

What has gone down so far?

Just before this event were the men’s semi finals. If you missed it, here’s a lightening-stop recap of what went down:

  • 21 male snowboarders who failed to qualify straight to finals in the first stages on Thursday dropped into the course and had two runs to post their best score.
  • The top 4 highest scoring riders will now join the 8 riders from qualification in the finals kicking off now.
  • The 4 riders to progress through from semi finals were: Billy Morgan, Sage Kotsenburg, Mark McMorris and Yuki Kadono.

And what’s the deal with today’s finals?

12 riders will battle it out over two runs and the riders posting the highest three scores will receive Olympic gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. Simples!

Here’s who will be riding today:

    1. Yuki Kadono
    2. Mark McMorris
    3. Sage Kotsenberg
    4. Billy Morgan
    5. Jamie Nicholls
    6. Gjermund Braaten
    7. Sebastien Toutant
    8. Sven Thorgren
    9. Peetu Piiroinen
    10. Roope Tonteri
    11. Stale Sandbech
    12. Max Parrot

Why not have this live blog open alongside watching it on TV? You can get involved by leaving a comment (we’ll be reposting the best ones in the blog) or by hitting us up on twitter @onboardmag. We’d love to hear what you think of the runs!

Sam Oetiker: Welcome to our live coverage of the Sochi 2014 men’s slopestyle finals.

We’ll be live blogging here from 9.30am CET so don’t forget to tune in then!
8:41

Sam Oetiker: In the meantime, who do you think will walk away with the gold medal in today’s finals?
8:41
toddrichards@btoddrichardsIf I was @sagekotsenburg I would do the finals without a shirt on. Jus sayin’ #ltc
8:46
Comment From Jakob
Max Parrot. Watching X games big air and slope, it quite obvious that he has more to give.

Sam Oetiker: Yeah, Max is definitely looking like the one to beat judging by the qualis and his X Games performances!
8:54
Blaze Kotsenburg@blazekotsenburg Retweeted by toddrichards@sagekotsenburg so proud of you. Literally crying on the phone with mom and dad. Couldnt be more stoked for what you stand for my man. Love.
8:56
Comment From Jakob
Hope Sage places well too. Would be great if someone like him, who represent another, maybe more truer side than the competitive, goes far.

Sam Oetiker: We’re with you on that one Jakob! Great to see someone doing different grabs, creative stuff on the rails and generally being a boss at life. Sage rules! Ethan Morgan and Sage wrote an interesting piece on the whole thing here: http://onboardmag.com/features/talking-points/the-death-of-style-in-contest-snowboarding-ethan-morgan-and-sage-kotsenburg-speak-out.html Did you catch that one?
9:02
Comment From Jakob
i did in fact. refreshing
9:04
Comment From Jakob
whats your opinion in the judging so far Sam?

Sam Oetiker: I actually don’t think they are too far off. They’re obviously placing a fair bit of emphasis on the difficulty of tricks on the rails and rewarding amplitude and execution on the kickers
9:08

Tom Copsey: Hi there. If you fancy a recap of the action in the Semis, just posted a hastily penned report of what went down here to tide you over till Finals kick off – http://onboardmag.com/snowboarding-events/other-snowboarding-events/sochi-2014-live-blog-mens-slopestyle-finals.html
9:08

Tom Copsey: Now, COFFEEEE!
9:09

Tom Copsey: Sorry, that was the link to the semis live blog. Here’s the right link to the report – http://onboardmag.com/sochi-2014/winter-olympics-sochi-2014-mens-slopestyle-semi-finals-report.html
9:09

Tom Copsey: Told you I needed coffee.
9:13
Comment From Jakob
didnt see the semis, but mcmorris not making the finals directly wasnt too unfair in my opinion. Didnt analyze the runs to much, but his rails were kind of stock, and even though he trew a triple he had a not too “difficult” cab dub 9 in the jump line. Others were throwing two 12s and a 10, and he threw 9, 10. 14.
9:13
Comment From Danny Quinn

10:03
Comment From Mel
Like ze Germans? ;)
10:03

Tom Copsey: Heja Sverige. Someone send me some snus please.
10:03

Mike Brindley: Wow – super harsh from the judges there…
10:04

Tom Copsey: WHAT???
10:04

Sam Oetiker: 83.75?
10:04

Sam Oetiker: Sorry judges but that’s WAY too low a score for that run
10:04

Tom Copsey: Would love to be in the mind of the judges right now.
10:04

not so hot, not so cool not so yours
10:05

Mike Brindley: Peetu up next – no stranger to winning – 4 World Snowboard Tour overall titles and once bagged himself $100,000 in a single day!
10:05

Sam Oetiker: Peetu just stomped: 270 on, cab boardslide to regs, front 5 bonk, switch back 10 massive, cab 12 SO DEEP, back 12 to finish
10:06
Comment From Youri
Freakin Peetumachine! Tired of pipe? no biggie i’ll do slope instead. And kill it too.
10:06
Comment From Mel
That was not fair. Sven’s riding is incredible and he has made such a progress in the last years – I remember seeing him at the World Rookie Finals in Ischgl 5 years ago, he was such a small and shy kid and now he is just killing it! Hope he gets a better score for his second run…
10:06

Sam Oetiker: Roope Tonteri from Finland up next…
10:06

Tom Copsey: Really struggling to figure out the judges’ thinkings
10:07

Yalda Walter: why on earth is there someone knitting
10:07

Yalda Walter: guys, tell me i wasn’t the only one seeing this
Comment From Mel
Wow that guy at the drop in must be bored – he is knitting!?!
10:07

Mike Brindley: Going for infamy with a cross stitch
10:07

Tom Copsey: Roope. Cab 270 on 270 off, 5050 back 3 to front lip 270, front 3 doll tap, front 10, big back 12 but goes big and arses out
10:07
Comment From TC
Peetu scores?

Tom Copsey: 78.5
10:08
Comment From Guest
Vad fan hände?
10:08
Comment From Norwegian guy
I thnk the judges look a lot on the rails…
10:08

Sam Oetiker: Stale Sandbech up next! This guy rips so hard
10:09
Comment From Norwegian guy
Go Norge!!!
10:09

“elegant”
10:09

Sam Oetiker: His run: cab 270 hardway, sw boardslide 270 off, butter spinny thingy (we can’t keep up dammit!), cab triple to hand drag….
10:10

Sam Oetiker: Stale not quite able to hold it together there
10:10

Tom Copsey: Are the riders going a bit too all in?
10:10
Comment From Mel
The German commentator is a legend: “The Norwegians live right next to the Swedish team – they have a lot of fun up there”.
10:10

Mike Brindley: Anyone who’s seen the RK1 edits will know Stale’s not a fan of holding back though…
10:10

Sam Oetiker: Max Parrot up next!
10:12

Sam Oetiker: Max’s run: front 270 on, 50 50 360 off, back rodeo, cab triple (massive,!) front dub 10, back triple 14 but juuuust sits down!
10:12
Comment From Jamie
What about Peetus score??? Insane 1620 first ever fo fucks sake!
10:12

Tom Copsey: Max looked like he took the last hit a little too much for granted. Didnt quite give it enough
10:12
Comment From TC
uh oh
10:13

Sam Oetiker: If Max can get that run under control that’s definitely a podium placing run
10:13

10:13

Sam Oetiker: So we’ve got Sage, Jamie and Sven in the top spots going into the second runs
10:14

Sam Oetiker: Lots of bails in those first runs, looks like the pressure of riding in the first ever Olympic slopestyle finals is getting to some of these dudes
10:14

Sam Oetiker: They’re all sending it SO deep
10:14
Comment From Jez
Max’s run was a winner if he doesn’t sits. Super smooth on landings, way more technical and with others faltering…
10:15
Comment From Guest
Peetu and Sven got robbed big time, who cares about mcmorgans crying when seeing judging like this?
10:15
toddrichards@btoddrichardsOmg is this real life ? @welickthecat
10:16

Tom Copsey: And it’s back to the top for run 2. This is kind of a big deal for these guys. And not without a fair bit of pressure for most of em. Who’s got the minerals? We’ll find out shortly…
10:16

bro-ing it out
10:16
Owen Schmitke@OSchmikeRT @onboardmag: Anyone know why the judges seem to have it in for Mark Mcmorris?
10:17

Tom Copsey: Bit of F-bombing on the Beeb. Jolly good show Billy
