women-live-blog-pipeWelcome to our live coverage of the Sochi 2014 Women’s halfpipe qualification! We’ll be reporting on all the action as it happens with run-by-run analyses, failed attempts at being funny and other cool shit in our live blog below. Tune in, or well, don’t…

We’ll be kicking things off today, right here at 11am CET.

Here’s how competitors can qualify for halfpipe finals:

  • The female snowboarders have been randomly divided into two heats.
  • In each heat, the top 3 riders will progress straight to finals later today.
  • The following 6 highest scoring riders from each heat will battle it out in the semi finals, with the top 6 from that joining the automatic qualifiers in a 12 woman final.\

Get involved with our live blog below by leaving a comment or hitting us up on twitter @onboardmag.

Mike Brindley: Cameraman’s been eating his weetabix again…
11:01

Sam Oetiker: Sophie Rodriguez from France kicking off the women’s halfpipe comp!
11:02

Yalda Walter: sofies nickname if pof

Mike Brindley: Any idea why?
11:02

Sam Oetiker: It is looking decidedly un-wintery in Sochi today…
11:02

Yalda Walter: googling pof gets you a dating website…
11:03

Yalda Walter: sophies score. 78.50
11:03

Sam Oetiker: Kelly Clark is up next!
11:03

Sam Oetiker: She’ll be looking for her first Olympic gold medal today
11:05

Sam Oetiker: A mellow run there from Kelly, decent amplitude though
11:05

Yalda Walter: ursinas bro competed in last night’s event
11:05

Mike Brindley: Definitely not a bad ideas to put down a safe run in these conditions..
11:06

Mike Brindley: Get points on the board before you’re riding through a puddle
11:06

Sam Oetiker: Ursina Haller is up next! Ursina comes fresh from winning the Burton European Open in Laax. Her run: straight air, back 5, front 5, front 7, cab 3,
11:07

Tom Copsey: This is tough. Feeling for these girls.
11:07

11:07

Yalda Walter: ursinas score: 69.00
11:08

Yalda Walter: Shuang Li is on
11:08

Sam Oetiker: Straight air, backside air, front 5, back 5, front 7, cab3, front 3,
11:09

Sam Oetiker: Nice clean run there from Li but she’ll need to go bigger if she wants to challenge the likes of Kelly Clark

Yalda Walter: her nicknames are edna and night train..
11:10

Sam Oetiker: Ooh just sitting down on her front 7
11:10

Tom Copsey: When she won the BEO a few years (4?) back, she was kicking out Shaun-style front 5 stales. Not this time as she goes down…
11:11

Sam Oetiker: Look how soft the pipe looks – I reckon I could ride that thing and not actually die
11:11

“what are you bringing to sochi?” “hum, i think a gigantic kangaroo”
11:11

Yalda Walter: crawford’s score: 43.00

Sam Oetiker: This lady is called Sun!
11:12

Sam Oetiker: There’s plenty of that around today huh?

Yalda Walter: i appreciate that
11:12

Tom Copsey: Yeah, usually pipes that size when they’re sheer ice put the fear of god in me. That looks almost fun for the likes of regular snowboarders. Not so fun for the pros though
11:12

Yalda Walter: also sun’s wearing yellow pants

Mike Brindley: She’s clearly done a sun-dance too and is to blame for this whole weather thing..

11:13

Yalda Walter: sunny score at 70.00, 4th place

11:15

Sam Oetiker: Queralt Castellet is up! Her run: back 5, front 5, backside air, front 9, backside air, front 7
11:15

Tom Copsey: Let’s see if Queralt Castellet gets redemption for Vancouver, where she was going strong until she ate it in training before finals and had to pull out. That was a good way to banish the ghosts.
11:15

11:15

Sam Oetiker: That was a big, solid run although not sure if the judges will be down with two backside airs…
11:16

Yalda Walter: queralt 93.25! 1st place now, clark’s at 92.25 right now..

11:20

Yalda Walter: at 1.50m magiros is the smallest competitor
11:20

Tom Copsey: Aussies swept up their full quota of spots for this. Bonza!

11:24

Yalda Walter: 51.25 for trigger
11:24

Sam Oetiker: Alexandra Duckworth is up!
11:24

Yalda Walter: duckworth must be one of the most awesome-est names ever
11:25

Yalda Walter: everything that includes ducks straight up bosses
11:25

Sam Oetiker: crippler, back to back 5s and a 720 attempt at the end – just goes down!
11:27

Yalda Walter: what the duck, 42.25
11:27

Sam Oetiker: Quacking hell that’s a low score…
11:27

Sam Oetiker: Nadja Purtschurt is up!
11:27

Yalda Walter: Nadja PURTSCHERT includes juggling, riding a unicycle, acrobats and trampoline jumping in her training regime. basically she is her own circus

11:29

Sam Oetiker: She just clipped the lip on a backside air
11:29

11:31

Yalda Walter: makar’s score: 44.75, 9th place

11:32

Sam Oetiker: Castellet, Clark, Rodriguez holding the top spots at the moment
11:32
