LIVE BLOG - Sochi 2014 Women's Halfpipe FINALS

womens-pipe-finals-live-blog

Tune in to our live coverage of the Sochi 2014 women’s halfpipe finals to see whether Torah Bright can defend her Olympic gold medal from the ever-hungry Kelly Clark. The halfpipe is looking as slushy as ever but let’s just keep our fingers crossed that it doesn’t hold these ladies back.

Much like yesterday’s men’s pipe comp the pipe in Sochi today has made riding incredibly difficult for these ladies. The qualis and semis were in all truth pretty dire again today – and the pipe seemed just as, if not bumpier and slushier than than it was for the men’s comp yesterday. .

Either way, we still have a final on our hands and we’re figuring that this will probably come down to a Torah Bright/Kelly Clark showdown, perhaps with a side of Querelt Castellet and Kaitlyn Farrington. We would be saying that Arielle Gold would be one to watch, but sadly she got eaten alive by the pipe in training this morning and did not start.

Anyway, someone needs to win this thing to put it out of its misery. Here are those who’ll be riding, in order of dropping…

Rana OKADA, Mirabelle THOVEX, Ursina HALLER, Shuang LI, Jiayu LIU, Kaitlyn FARRINGTON, Sophie RODRIGUEZ, Xuetong CAI, Queralt CASTELLET, Hannah TETER, Torah BRIGHT, Kelly CLARK

Here’s the full chat from the blog in plain text:

5:54

Tom Copsey: Righto, we’re getting ready for go-time in the last of this Winter Olympics’ freestyle snowboard events: the Women’s Halfpipe Final. First rider should drop 18.30 CET, so we’ll start the banter a few minutes before that.
6:11

Tom Copsey: In case… actually can’t think of any reason why you wouldn’t be able to read the names of the girls that’ll be riding, which we posted above, but, you know, just in case… here they are again:
6:12

Tom Copsey: Rana OKADA, Mirabelle THOVEX, Ursina HALLER, Shuang LI, Jiayu LIU, Kaitlyn FARRINGTON, Sophie RODRIGUEZ, Xuetong CAI, Queralt CASTELLET, Hannah TETER, Torah BRIGHT, Kelly CLARK
6:14

Tom Copsey: If we were to make any predictions… it’s hard to look past Kelly Clark really. Sure, Queralt Castellet, Torah Bright and Hannah Teter all impressed in training, but Kelly just boots it and can do (admittedly a little ungainly) front 10s double overhead.
6:30

Sam Oetiker: Rana Okada dropping!
6:31

Sam Oetiker: Backside air, frontside 9, back 5, front 7, cab 7 but sits down!
6:32

Tom Copsey: 2.9m backside air to kick things off with. Was pretty much smashing that run till the last hit. Pressure on for Rana’s second run
6:32

Sam Oetiker: Remember that you can drop us comments, corrections, trivia or staight up abuse in the comment box above
6:34

Sam Oetiker: Mirabelle Tovex is up next! Her first run goes a little something like: frontside air, back 5, front 5, backside air, frontside 7, cab 3, front corked 5
6:34

Sam Oetiker: She’s going to need to seriously step up her amplitude to get anywhere near that podium
6:34

Sam Oetiker: We’ve got some heavy hitters coming up!
6:36

Sam Oetiker: Ursina Haller’s first run: frontside air, backside 5, frontside 5, backside air, front 9 and sits down…
6:36

Mike Brindley: Tiiiiinndddyyy
6:37
Comment From Mel
Double the height of the French girl!
6:37

Sam Oetiker: Shuang Li up next: her first run, lien, backside air, front 5, back 5, front 7, cab 7, front 3
6:38

Sam Oetiker: That was rather tidy from Li
6:38

Tom Copsey: Hot potatoes for days on some of her grabs though
6:38

Yalda Walter: shuang li’s score at 73.25, first place!
6:38

Mike Brindley: Struggling with the grabs though..
6:39

Yalda Walter: Jiayu Liu aka The Rolling Kid up next
6:39
helenmagiros

So proud of my baby girl right now! She did awesome, 18th in an Olympic Games! xxx #olympics #sochi2014 #halfpipe @stephmagiros

Mike Brindley: Feathergirl and her mum looking stokes
6:39

Sam Oetiker: At least these tricks are a tad more relatable than the mens – I’m actually feeling like wanting to go ride pipe after that

Mike Brindley: True..

Sam Oetiker: Riding pipe is the BEST workout you can do on your snowboard too. It’s bloody exhausting.
6:40

Sam Oetiker: Jiayu Liu’s first run: backside air, but goes down on a front 9 attempt
6:40

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s @kellyclarkfdn flying through #SHPNY before the #Halfpipe competition! Tune in to the #Olympics NOW! #KellyTakesSochi #RoadToSochi

Mike Brindley: Whats going on here?
6:40

Yalda Walter: 15.75 for liu
6:41

Sam Oetiker: Kaitlyn Farrington. Air to fakie, switch back 7, back 9, alley oop back 5, backside air, front corked 7!
6:42

Mike Brindley: Loved that!
6:42

Sam Oetiker: Very unusual run from Kaitlyn! Beautiful to watch…
6:42

Tom Copsey: Small, but pretty darned tech right there. Someone who went to the Torah Bright school of pipe riding, though just doesn’t go as big as Bright
6:42

fa
6:42

Yalda Walter: 85.75 for farrington
6:43

Sam Oetiker: and the top spot, for now.
6:43

Yalda Walter: rodriguez aka pof is up next
6:44

Sam Oetiker: Our stream has died!
6:44

Sam Oetiker: Someone fill us in!
6:45
Comment From Mel
Why are the French trainers wearing ski boots!?!

Sam Oetiker: We honestly, have no idea. We spotted that earlier. Such a travesty

Tom Copsey: According to some Frenchies on Twitter, skibooter is the team doc. Valerie Boudier, the coach, is certainly a snowboarder. She’ll be the French lady at the top of the pipe with snowboard boots on but no snowboard
6:45

Sam Oetiker: Apparently Rodriguez scored 77.75
6:45

Sam Oetiker: We are still having stream issues
6:46

Mike Brindley: She’s hitting a back 9 on the first hit!
6:46

Mike Brindley: Could be cleaner though..
6:46
Comment From Mel
That run was overscored in my opinion…

Sam Oetiker: We missed it, how come?
6:46
Comment From earl
now the heavy hitters are about to drop!
6:46

Yalda Walter: Xuetong Cai is up next
6:47

Yalda Walter: she has the 90s swag going with roller skating being her hobby besides snowboarding
6:47

Mike Brindley: Xuetong with 3 straight airs in her run – playing it very safe…
6:47

Mike Brindley: front 5 and two 720s
6:47

Sam Oetiker: back 5, front 5, backside air, back 7, cab 7, frontside slob, backside air,
6:48

Yalda Walter: NIKE !NIKE! NIKE!NINKEN NIKE!
6:48

Yalda Walter: nike’s score is 84.25
6:48

Yalda Walter: 2nd place

6:48

Mike Brindley: Hannah Teter show em!
6:49

Sam Oetiker: Did you know that Hannah Teter has her own Ben and Jerry’s flavour ice cream in the US?
6:49

Sam Oetiker: Yeah, she’s a big deal…
6:49
Comment From Mel
She is such a cool girl and she can ride pow, too ;)
6:50

Sam Oetiker: backside air, front 9, back 5, front 7, cab 7, lien, back 9!
6:50

Mike Brindley: Complicated maths from Hannah – two 900s two 720s!
6:50

Sam Oetiker: Seemed to lose all of her momentum but then whipped out a back 9 final hit
6:51

Yalda Walter: hanna’s score is a whopping 90.50 which smashes her into first place
6:51

Tom Copsey: Lent her my gloves when she was a kid, and she bought me a beer. Met her on a lift last year. She didn’t remember.
6:51

Sam Oetiker: High fives all round there for team USA
6:52

Yalda Walter: german commentator: “The flea from barcelona”
6:52

Tom Copsey: But then I had just made the faux pas of asking her “Didn’t you do pretty Ok at one of the Olympics?” She won in 2006. D’oh!
6:52

Sam Oetiker: Queralt Castellet is up! Her first run: Maassive back 9, front 5, back 5, front 9, big backside air, front 7 noooooo!
6:53

Sam Oetiker: That was so looking so good!
6:53

Mike Brindley: Buttchecks at the last…
6:53

Mike Brindley: Such a shame – hopefully that won’t haunt her.
6:53

Yalda Walter: queralt’s score 61.75, 7th place
6:54

Yalda Walter: T-Bone yissss
6:54

Tom Copsey: Could well have been first if she;d not fallen…

6:58
Comment From elena?

Tom Copsey: Didn’t make the team I guess.
6:59

7:02
Silvia Mittermüller@SilviaMittermul Retweeted by Chanelle SladicsSad that @TorahBright & @q_castellet & @Kellyclarkfdn all went down! Is it holes in the pipe? Would have been crazy runs.
7:02

Mike Brindley: Had space for another hit – but chose to take what she had.
7:02

Yalda Walter: 85.50 for rana okada, third place!
7:02
Chanelle Sladics@ChanelleSladics@SilviaMittermul slushy flat bottom and some holes I think
7:03

7:04

Sam Oetiker: She’ll stay in 7th for now
7:05

Yalda Walter: ursina is a yoga-worshipper
7:05

Sam Oetiker: frontside air, back 5, big front 5 but she loses all her speed again!
7:06

Sam Oetiker: After seeing her abslutely boss it at the BEO a few weeks back it’s pretty obvious that it’s this pipe that is making this really difficult for these ladies

Sam Oetiker: Which is a massive shame. They’re so much better than this!
7:06

Yalda Walter: 26.75 for ursina, staying in 10th place
7:07

Sam Oetiker: lien air, backside air, front 800…
7:07

Mike Brindley: Beeb commentators are saying these runs were clean in practice – apparently its the pressure, not the pipe…

Sam Oetiker: I beg to differ Mike. To me the runs have been sub par all day.

Sam Oetiker: But I guess practice is a different story
7:07

Sam Oetiker: all over for Shuang Li
7:08

Tom Copsey: Now that WAS an 800

Mike Brindley: Cover his eyes – she’s dancing again
7:11
Comment From Mel
Why didn’t the German TV get someone proper to do the comments? I would have loved to see Silvia Mittermüller or Ethan Morgan!

Yalda Walter: i don’t think ethan would be up for that..
7:12

Sam Oetiker: Kaitlyn Farrington’s second run: air to fakie, switch back 7, back 9, alley oop 5, back 5, cork front 7!

7:20

Yalda Walter: She took part in an advertising campaign called ‘save the seals’ . you should always save the seals
7:20

Sam Oetiker: So a guaranteed medal for Farrington

Sam Oetiker: Actually not quite… Castellet could still break into top 3
7:22

Tom Copsey: But she won’t, I’m afraid

7:22

Sam Oetiker: Queralt’s run: back 9, front 5, back 5, lien, backside, cab 7
7:22

Yalda Walter: queralt’s score 55.25, 9th place
7:22

Mike Brindley: Huge 9 – pretty much to flat..
