Welcome to our live coverage of the Sochi 2014 men’s halfpipe semi-finals! We’ll be reporting on all the action as it happens with run-by-run analyses, failed attempts at being funny and other cool shit in our live blog below. Tune in, or well, don’t…
We’ll be kicking things off today, right here at 16.00 CET.
Here’s how competitors can qualify for halfpipe finals:
- This morning the 43 male snowboarders were randomly divided into two heats.
- In each heat, the top 3 riders progressed straight to finals later today.
- The following 6 highest scoring riders from each heat will now battle it out in the semi finals, with the top 6 from that joining the automatic qualifiers in a 12 man final.

Here’s the full chat from the blog in plain text:
Tom Copsey: Hi, and welcome to our live blog of the men’s pipe semis. The quali’s looked like the pipe was royally chewed by the end, but good news is it’s now dark on site and hopefully therefore colder, meaning if they groomed it well before it should hold up a little better. We’ll see shortly
Yalda Walter: Johann baisamy: fs 10, cab 5 to deck…
Tom Copsey: Pipe still looks slushy. Johan’s not stoked
Yalda Walter: 18.50 for baisamy
Yalda Walter: o’connor up next: backside air, front 5 tailb, back 5, fs10 too deep, cab7,
Yalda Walter: has his own documentary called “lucky enough”, their favourite saying is “If you’re lucky enough to be Irish, you’re lucky enough.” errr…
Yalda Walter: 54.00 for seamus o’connor
Tom Copsey: Sketched from Seamus too. Bad luck or bad pipe?
Yalda Walter: cars and watches are to ipod what bags and shoes are to women… thats what he says at least
Sam Oetiker: Iouri Podladtchikov’s first run in semis: backside air, frontside 9, backside 9, frontside 10, cab double, frontside 5 to double claim!
tried to get a screen grab but he disappears in the background..
Sam Oetiker: He’ll be stoked to get a clean first run on the scoreboard
Tom Copsey: Iouri’s stoked right now. Safe run for him but could that have put his quali wobbles out his mind?
Mike Brindley: For fucks sake – we haven’t even tuned in yet over here..
Yalda Walter: 87.50 for iouri!
Yalda Walter: greg loves camping and shooting guns. bad combination for when you’re a bear
Sam Oetiker: Greg Bretz d-d-d-dropping! His first run: front double 10, cab double 10, front 9, backside 9, front 10 tail, cab 10, wallop!
Sam Oetiker: That was a very nice run indeed
Tom Copsey: I reckon that could bump down Iouri. Not as big but more tech. See how the judges weigh up that old chestnut…
Sam Oetiker: And went bigger than he was going in qualis as well.
Tom Copsey: 83.0. What do I know
Yalda Walter: bretz 83.00
Sam Oetiker: Who do you guys want to see make finals? Let us know by dropping a comment above!
Yalda Walter: celebrated his 24th birthday two days ago, hope the hangover is cured by now
Sam Oetiker: Nate Johnstone’s first run: backside air, front dub 10 too deep, cab double but that’s it for Johnstone!
Yalda Walter: 25.75 for johnstone
Yalda Walter: bigboyisback$$$$
Yalda Walter: wancheng shi that is
Mike Brindley: Arggghh where are the semi-finals – sort it out BBC
Sam Oetiker: Wancheng Shi is up! front 7 (big!) cab 10 double but reverse tacos on the coping!
Yalda Walter: in case you’re wondering, why we’re calling him big boi, fis told us that’s his nickname
Sam Oetiker: That looked mighty painful
Tom Copsey: Lucky he didn’t get bucked into the pipe. That would have been minging
Tom Copsey: Shaking it off now.
Sam Oetiker: He could have at least dropped back into the pipe and sideslipped it for the others… ;p
Sam Oetiker: Kent Callister up next. Owner of a very nice method indeed
Yalda Walter: 15.50 for big boy shi
Sam Oetiker: method, frontside 10, cab double 10, front double crippler, oooh back 9 but fluffs it!
Tom Copsey: That Method was sexual
Sam Oetiker: We’ll be seeing it at least one more time!
Yalda Walter: callisters wiki says he HAS competed in sochi 2014, so apparently he’s ahead of our time..
Tom Copsey: shame he couldnt put down that last 9 as he was going strong there. All to do in the second run now
Yalda Walter: callisters score: 49.25, 4th place
Yalda Walter: TKR prefers tight pants over baggy pants, in case you were wondering
Sam Oetiker: Tim Kevin Ravnjak up next – kid’s only 17!
Sam Oetiker: His first run: backside air, frontside 1080, cab 7, front 9, mctwist, inverted front 7
Sam Oetiker: Puts it down but he needs to go bigger!
Yalda Walter: taylor gold loves jmping on a trampoline
Sam Oetiker: Taylor Gold is up next. He’s been bossing it in events this season. We’d expect him to qualify for finals today.
Yalda Walter: guys, i am not making up these facts, i did some serious research on this. the internet is awesome
Sam Oetiker: His first run: big back 5 japan, front 9 but he washes out!
Yalda Walter: taylor gold 26.00. no gold for gold
Sam Oetiker: Haha surely you can do better than that Yalda…
Yalda Walter: in preperation for the olympics arthur started to go to the gym, cruise the organic isle at the supermarket, stop partying hard and got a road bycicle. sounds kinda sad.
Sam Oetiker: Monsieur Longo! Let’s see it: massive front 7 but lands way in the flat!
Sam Oetiker: Interestingly the UK’s Ben Kilner had pointed out that the walls are so vertical that he was getting spat out into the flat-bottom…
Sam Oetiker: No idea if they tweaked it since then though
Yalda Walter: lonog’s score is 12.00
Tom Copsey: This pipe is spitting more than an ex-girlfriend of mine. No, NOT like that
Sam Oetiker: Lonog?
Yalda Walter: sadly, i don’t have a single random fact about zhang
Mike Brindley: Finally – got it!
Sam Oetiker: Yiwei Zhang’s first run: backside air, front double 10, cab double 10, front crippler double, but he scuffs it!
Comment From Arno
But Sam, you see guys landing on the deck aswell, so…
Sam Oetiker: very true, I guess it’s all in the way you pop off the lip
Yalda Walter: zhang: 45.00
Sam Oetiker: And that’s it for first runs, back to the top!
someone’s a photoshop pro
Comment From Arno
I don’t know how much they tweaked it between training sessions, otherwise it’s hard getting accustomed to it, I guess
Tom Copsey: IPod currently in first after run 1
Sam Oetiker: With Greg Bretz and Tim Kevin following
Comment From Nik
why isn’t Jan scherrer staring?
Tom Copsey: Guessing he got hurt in practice. Shame, kid’s got nice style
Sam Oetiker: If I-Pod finishes first, will he launch his helmet towards some unsuspecting person in the crowd like he did at last years Euro X Games?
Yalda Walter: i wouldn’t mind him throwing his helmet at me
happy ipod is happy
Tom Copsey: Some serious board teching going on in the break between runs
Tom Copsey: There’s currently more wax in Russia than in the entire nation of Brazil
Sam Oetiker: Actually he chucked his entire board didn’t he?
Sam Oetiker: amazing if you can grab it and runaway, not so amazing if it cuts your head off…
Mike Brindley: Yea it’s Torstein lid to the face moment that stands out…
Tom Copsey: Ethan Morgan nearly did that to someone once.
Mike Brindley: Actually Torsteins were goggles…
Yalda Walter: but he appologised later, and she got to keep the goggles. win-win situation
Sam Oetiker: Always awkward when you have to issue a public apology for almost killing someone
Comment From Nik
at Freestyle.ch they’re always throwing their stuff into the crowd!
Yalda Walter: germans talking about shaun white, what a surprise
Tom Copsey: Ethan once chucked his board into the crowd, cracked a girl right in the head. He paid for a snowboard holiday for her. Thankfully she wasnt decapitated
Yalda Walter: been doing so for 5 minutes now
Yalda Walter: now about his documentation “yeah you like. get an idea about like, how hard it is to train for the olympics”
Sam Oetiker: Are they having a tea break (read:vodka break) or something? This is taking ages!
Comment From Mike
Question: Why is Jan Scherrer not started?
Tom Copsey: Don’t know but guess he hurt himself training
Tom Copsey: FYI, out Senior Photographer Matt Georges designed the graphic on the APO board Johann Baisamy’s about to drop in on
Yalda Walter: commentators still discussing shawwwn
Mike Brindley: I have the big screen and commentary stuck on curling – which is very distracting
Mike Brindley: Or as Tim @whitelines just called it – ‘fucking tiddlywinks’
Sam Oetiker: Damn I almost wished Danny Davis hadn’t made it straight to finals. Woulda made semis way more entertaining…
Comment From Arno
The Swiss judge has a Dutch name
Sam Oetiker: Johann Baisamy run 2: frontside 10, cab 7, frontside 9, back 9, front 5 and gets devoured by the bumps in the bottom
camera guy definitely took one or three vodka breaks
Sam Oetiker: At least the rider is actually in frame, that’s an improvement…
Tom Copsey: This pipe has a Dutch name too. It’s called Van Vucked if Johann’s troubles with it are anything to go by
Yalda Walter: baisamy 37.00 7.th place
Yalda Walter: neongreenpants up next
Sam Oetiker: Seamus O’Connor’s 2nd run: backside air, massive crippler poke, back 5, big front 10, cab 7, front 12 but lands nose heavy and cartwheels…
Comment From Arno
Nice one, Tom! And yeah, it is ridiculous…
Sam Oetiker: That was looking very promising
Comment From Chris
Danny Davis for gold baby!! If Sage can win it with style so can Danny. Danny just needs to go a little bigger in the finals!! USA!!!!
Tom Copsey: The above, -USA
Yalda Walter: seamus 43.00, still in 4th place
Yalda Walter: podster is up next
Yalda Walter: He likes shopping in Aspen, Zürich and San Francisco and suits from Italy suit him the best.
Sam Oetiker: The poddage is up! I-pod’s 2nd run: backside air (textbook!) frontside air air to fakie, cab 7, slash… I-pod just did a style run!
Sam Oetiker: If I-Pod ever breaks a bone they should call him podcast…
Yalda Walter: i will give you a virtual high5 for that sam
Sam Oetiker: Greg Bretz – the man with no face
Sam Oetiker: His 2nd run: front dub 10, cab 7, front 9 but he’s fooked it!
Tom Copsey: Aaaaand if you want to know what IPod’s run looks like done properly, rewatch his BEO victory lap where he did the same run just twice as big. This is a little embarrassing.
Sam Oetiker: If he had a face he’d look kinda bummed right now
Sam Oetiker: Luckily for him he did a good first run though
Tom Copsey: The Olympics created a whole new discipline of snowboarding! Yay! Halfpipe moguls! Yay! Slo-mo really showing up the bumpiness of the trannies
USA! USA! USA! MURICA!
Yalda Walter: bretz 44.25
Yalda Walter: Johnstone suffered a mishap during a routine halfpipe drill at a pre-Olympic training camp in Gaylord (GAYLORD YOU GUYS; LOL!) , Michigan, sustaining an ankle fracture and a twisted ankle
Sam Oetiker: Nathan Johnstone backside air, front double ten to flat, cab 5 underflip, front 9, backside 9… hmm he kind of stuffed that one up
Comment From Mike
What was I-pods score on 2nd run???
Sam Oetiker: Only a 41 – but he was just taking it easy with a style run. He’s already safely through to finals with his first run score
Yalda Walter: johnstone 73.50 3rd place now
Sam Oetiker: Surprisingly high score for Johnstone there!
Yalda Walter: shiiiii
Sam Oetiker: Wancheng Shi’s 2nd run – front 10, massive haakon flip, straight air, back 9, big front 9
Comment From Joe
Apazz the blocks of wax that the Aussie team use cost $600 each…
Tom Copsey: they need to buy a few more i reckon
Sam Oetiker: Kent Callister up next. His method is rather sexeh indeed
Yalda Walter: shi: 78.50
shis trainer is NOT satisfied
Mike Brindley: Yep Sam – kid’s got more tweak than that South Park character
Yalda Walter: i may have mentioned this before, but callister’s uncle invented Vegimite
Sam Oetiker: Kent’s run: method, front 10, cab dub 10, front crippler, back 9 and just gets it round…
Yalda Walter: 79.50 for callister
Tom Copsey: and currently 3rd
Yalda Walter: TKR is wearing a pretty decent outfit. camo’s very 2014
Sam Oetiker: Tim Kevin Ravnjak’s 2nd run: backside air, front 10, cab 7, front 9, back 5 poke, cork front 7
Yalda Walter: his trainers are awesome too. neongreen
Tom Copsey: Slovenia winning the ‘Best National Team Outfit’ gold medal right there
Mike Brindley: This is just a saga now – O’Neill’s halfpipe party – shredders on the screen with the commentary for curling. Cheers BBC/technology…
Tom Copsey: TBH you’re not missing much, Mike
Mike Brindley: I can see everything but it’s heavily overdubbed by scottish wailing
and by trainers i mean obviously coaches
Comment From Joe
I had a sauna with TKR once…
Sam Oetiker: 5th for TKR with that run
Yalda Walter: TKR 75.50
Comment From Urbanis
Whats Jan Scherrers score? Did he made it to the finals?
Tom Copsey: Spannered himself somehow. Not taken his runs
Sam Oetiker: Taylor Gold 2nd run: big back 5 japan, frontside 9, backside rodeo stalefish, front dub 10, cab 7…. just sits down on his final front 10
Yalda Walter: gold’s score: 60.75, not enough for the finals
Sam Oetiker: Come on Monsiuer Longo!
Yalda Walter: arthur longo, or as the germany call him “arthüüüür longoooh”
Sam Oetiker: For the love of baguettes!
Sam Oetiker: front 7 massive, cab 7, front 9 but he sits down!
Sam Oetiker: Noooo Arthur!
Tom Copsey: Arthur – sack this off now and go ride pow.
Sam Oetiker: Seconded
those are the saddest eyes i have ever seen. i really want to give him a hug
Sam Oetiker: Yiwei Zhang’s 2nd run: backside air, front 10 double, cab 10 double, crippler, mc barrel roll… front 7
Sam Oetiker: And that, my wonderful internet cyber-friends, is it for men’s semi finals.
Tom Copsey: Like many of the other riders, Arthur sacrificed a lot to try to do this contest. He, and they, don’t deserve to have to ride a half-melted popsicle
Yalda Walter: zhing zhang: 79.25, he IN!
Tom Copsey: After the Vancouver Olympic pipe was only just saved by a last-minute freeze, they just HAVE to think these locations through better next time round. Or come up with snow that doesn’t melt
Tom Copsey: So those six fellas will shuffle over to the finals. The rest, well, I guess it’s been an experience for them at least. What kind of experience we’re not entirely sure…
Comment From Arno
Indoor pipe anyone https://www.google.nl/search?q=snowworld+landgraaf&safe=off&espv=210&es_sm=122&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=0kn6UszCDsriywOZwoKoDw&ved=0CHsQsAQ&biw=720&bih=623
Tom Copsey: When they award the 2030 Winter Games to Quatar, for sure!
Comment From Espen_kroll
So, go home watch the finals, or study more, and go snowboarding tomorow?
Tom Copsey: Judging by the semis, study more and go shred tomorrow! Danny Davis’s switch Methods are rad tho.
