When: Sat 5th of April 2008
Where: Serfaus, AustriaThe name of this event already suggests that it is girls-only so it was no surprise that the female Onboard staff was stoked to pack their always oversized bags to head to Serfaus in Austria Friday afternoon.
Croatian girl Anja Stefan on her way to the finals.
We had already heard rumours that Heida and Runar, the founders of the Icelandic girl´s brand, would show up at the event themselves and after more than 12 hours on the road, they finally made it and invited us for dinner! I never met somebody from Iceland before but they not only seem to be very down to earth persons but also living in an amazing country where you can go snowboarding in the morning and surfing in the afternoon – sounds like paradise to me! And they are used to drink a lot (did you know that beer was illegal for a long time but vodka a common drink for 14 years olds?), as Geiri, the Nikita marketing dude, proofed when he went out until 5.30 in the morning but was one of the first to be at the contest site on Saturday.
A trophy also goes to Nikita for the chilling contest atmosphere.
Unfortunately the girls didn´t drink too much as the weather was anything but perfect on Saturday morning. The Nikita Chickita is a contest for everybody (except boys) and in the end 23 girls had signed up, ready to show their skills. The park looked perfect, with two kicker lines, a tree bonk, some rails and boxes, as well as an impressing wallride. Pretty Maude Richon from Switzerland, Snowpark Tour winner Elena Koentz, Nikita team rider Lenka Sedlarova and many more tried to figure out how to handle the difficult conditions (very flat light and low visibility) but did pretty well and hit almost every obstacle. Judges Julia Baumgartner and Vinzenz Lüps additionally motivated the girls with promising extra points for the first to hit the tree bonk and it was the winner-to-be, Ana Rumiha from Croatia who finally killed it with a sweet FS 180!
Ana Rumiha, the winner, with a 50-50 to Bs 180 out.
Despite everybody was keen on winning the 1000 euros for the first place, the atmosphere was extraordinary: „I never have been to a contest where all the girls got along so well with each other. We all just had so much fun“, Andrea Gysi, a Swiss girl, summarized the idea of the whole contest. „It is not about winning but about girls coming together and having fun“, Runar confirmed. Personally I think we should have more amateur events like this that are only for girls and backed by a well-known snowboard company like Nikita. Especially girls who just start to take part in competitions and are still a bit unsure about their performance, should get the possibility to ride without boys to gain more self-confidence.
How can you make girls happy? A good park, sunshine and a “snow bar”…
The girls at the Nikita Chickita got more self-confident with every run and in the finals, that were blessed with some sun, you could see backflips, super stylish BS 180, big BS 360 Melons and butterbox to nosepresses.
In the end it was „Mrs. Bonk the Tree“ Ana Rumiha from Croatia who not only took home 1000 euros but also a one year contract with Nikita. Second came Bohdana Sebestová (Czech Republic) who impressed the judges not only with a super smooth backside 360 tailgrab but also gapped the kinked box to 50:50 and rock reverted the wallride. Third place went to Nikita team rider Maude Richon from Switzerland who had a strong run and convinced with a backside 360 melon, a butterbox to nosepress on the picnic table, and a rock revert on the wall.
C is for crown? Bohdana Sebestová (Czech Republic), Ana Rumiha (Croatia) and Maude Richon (Switzerland).
