It all went off a day later than planned, but the Spring Battle snowboard contest held on March 30 at the Absolut Park in SalzburgerLand’s ONE BIG PARK, turned out to be a ripper with Germany’s Lars Österle taking first place with a huge backside 900 over the main kicker, followed by a backside 540 over the imposing moto-X jump.

Snow, poor visibility and strong winds had caused the postponement of the event from the planned date of Saturday March 29 to the next day.
It was a good decision, and an appreciative crowd basked under glorious sunshine as the competitors gave it their best. First obstacle for the riders was the 20m kicker, but they then had a choice of hitting a 10m high wall ride, transition box, spine or the “moto-X” jump – essentially a 15m long gap jump with a slight step up to the down-ramp.
Österle saved his best tricks for last, knocking out the 900 on his last of three runs in the Spring Battle final. He had already landed super-smooth 720s on his previous attempts and looked totally comfortable on the moto-X jump.
Second place went to Austrian Stefan Fankhauser who stomped a massive inverted backside 720 on the kicker and a slick 540 rodeo on the moto-X. In third was Matevz Pristavec of Slovenia.
“The event really well,” said organiser Seppi Harml of Absolut Park. “It was the right decision to postpone it until Sunday and we had perfect weather and an incredible level of riding.”
Despite the adverse weather, the Atomic Tag Team competition was held on the Saturday as scheduled. Teams of two simultaneously performed tricks over the second set of obstacles and winning first prize were Austrians Stefan Fankhauser and Phips Gruber.
