Where: Laax, Switzerland
Day five of the Burton European Open saw the women’s halfpipe qualification and the men’s slopestyle semifinals. Lesley McKenna showed the best run in the pipe and Janne Lipsanen came in first after delivering a very impressive first run through the slopestyle course.
Men’s Slopestyle Semifinals
After the qualification the day before this was the first time all seeded riders and the best riders out of the qualification stages opened their bag of tricks. Unfortunately the weather had changed over night and turned out to be quite a challenge for the riders: It was snowing slightly and the light was pretty flat. Nontheless, some riders were able to impress the judges with some massive tricks. It was Finnish rider Janne Lipsanen who showed the best performance in his first run. He started it with a frontside boardslide on the box, a backflip off the pole jam, a backside disaster on the jib barrel, a frontside lipslide to frontside boardslide on the box, a frontside inverted 7 on the quarterpipe finishing up with a cab 900, a frontside 720 and a cork backside 720 on the kicker-line. Not only were these tricks pretty technicals but they were oozing with style. Janne has made his way from the pre-qualifications all the way into the finals in true shredarella fashion.
Second came Norwegian Gjermund Braaten followed by another Finn, 17-year-old Roope Tonteri. Current TTR World Tour leader Peetu Piiroinen came in fourth and showed yet another clean and consistent performance. So did the best Swiss rider of the day Iouri Podladtchikov, who finished in fifth position. Judging from today’s performance they will be among the contenders for the BEO title and a piece of the US$125.000 prize purse.
Unfortunately due to the difficult conditions many seeded riders did not make the cut for the finals, among them O’Neill Evolution and Air&Style winner Marko Grilc, and TTR ranking numbers 3 and 5 Stale Sandbech (NOR) and Seppe Smits (BEL). They all miss out on the big finals of the best 16 slopestyle riders on Friday.
