German Slopestyle Champions Crowned

The happy German Slopestyle Champions 2013

Last Saturday the German championships went down in Oberstdorf in the very south of Germany. Yours truly Onboard Mag went through a lot of trouble (fighting a hangover, battling the traffic, dealing with the media accreditation) to go there and report from the event. Well, it also helped that the resort on the boarder to Austria had received a good dusting of fresh snow the night before.

What we saw was a decent park with some well-shaped obstacles, just about the right size for the rather motley starter field (young and old, male and female, French and German). But the organisation was spot on, the tricks mostly impressive, and from what we can tell the vibe among riders and orga crew was really good. And when we bumped into an all-girls O’Neill freeride camp and took a lap with them (breaking down the gender barriers and all) we officially marked this down as an event to stay, grow, and push German riding more in the future.

Now on to the official pribble-prabble that is the press release…

It was snowing and sunny at the same time. How cool is that?

German’s Slopestyle Champions Crowned

Matthias Vogt is Germany’s new snowboard slopestyle champion! The 27-year-old rider from Freiburg was able to cope best with the Fellhorn Park setup. His first run in the finals was enough to beat Luis Eckert and Frenchman Sebastian Konijenberg. He convinced the jugdges with a styled-out run consisting of a FS 7 tailgrab, a BS7 mute, a 50/50 backflip off over the pole and a transfer to wallride. However, the other riders pushed their limits as well, which made for a top-notch final. Luis Eckert showed a BS720 mute and a BS Rodeo in his frist run, and Sebastian Konijnenberg’s massive BS1080 double cork made for a thrilling final.

Among the women it was Nadine Härtinger (27) from Munich with 64.33 points, just behind overall winner Lou Chabelard. The French secured her win with her first run (BS 3, FS 5, BS boardslide and rock to fakie on the wall), which proved to be unbeatable in the first run.

The U15 riders did not take any prisonders either and showed that there are loads of content riders in the making. Among the boys French rider Sacha Moretti won (BS 540 mute, FS 180 over the big kicker, front board and lipslide 360 off on the wallride) ahead of Maximilian Preissinger, the new German junior slopestyle champion. Among the girls 11-year-old Leilani Ettel is the new German champion. She came third in the overall ranking.

In this 3-star event on the World Snowboard Tour a total of 45 riders showed up and rode the perfectly shaped Fellhorn Park setup over three kickers, a rail section (flat rail, O’Neill down rail, pole) and the MINI wallride. They showed how much creativity and versatility it takes in slopestyle these days. After the prize-giving outside the Out of Bounds shop in Oberstdorf, where great prizes from Red Bull, MINI, O’Neill and Pleasure were given away, everyone went to celebrate a perfect contest day at the Hörbar.

The German Snowboard Championsships 2013 were supported by MINI, Red Bull, O’Neill, Oberstdorf, Pleasure, Snowboard Verband Deutschland, Das Höchste, Bergbahnen Oberstdorf/Kleinwalsertal and Pipe Aid. The event was organised by the snowboard club Direttissima Oberstdorf.

How they managed to get the car there we have no idea.
