And, no, they don’t have a stunt scooter side event. We’ve just received some PR from the French announcing that part-time snowboarder Shaun White will be competing in the pipe AND slopestyle at the upcoming Winter X Games Europe in Tignes this March.
Shaun was notable by his absence from the recent World Snowboarding Championships (according to Terje it’s because the WSC were unwilling to pay what Shaun was asking to make an appearance) leading some to comment that Iouri Podladtchikov‘s pipe title was irrelevant as the Ginger One wasn’t riding. Well, it looks like Ipod will have his chance to show his minerals and pit himself against the guy that – whatever your opinion of him – is still arguably the best halfpipe rider around when the Winter X Games Europe rolls into Tignes. With Iouri and Louie Vito‘s rivalry palpable in Oslo, this third element could make the pipe contest explosive to say the least.
The real interesting thing is that White is also set to compete in the slopestyle. This was the case at the Aspen X Games earlier this season but he pulled out due to ‘injury’, only to rip the pipe a new one a few days later with the first ever 100 point score in X Games halfpipe history. Was he really injured and saving himself for the pipe or did he pull out realising he had a negligible chance of podiuming in slopestyle? We’ll see (hopefully) what he’s got when the circus hits Tignes from March 14-16.
