CHECK YOUR LINE!
A unique guidance system for free riders
Together with risk´n´fun, the new education programme of the Alpenvereinsjugend, the Kaunertal glacier introduces a new innovative information system for freeriders. The main focus is to elevate security off the beaten tracks. Four information tables posted at different locations at the Kaunertal glacier accompany the freerider on his run.
Special questions and information concerning different aspects of backcountry safety help the freerider to assess the situation in the mountains and to initiate critical thinking of the behaviour in the backcountry. The tables are designed to remind you to think about the situation and its circumstances.
Are you alone or in a group? Are the other group members experienced in riding off the beaten tracks? Does everybody have transceiver, a shovel and a probe? Can you see hazards in the alpine nature surrounding you? Did you check the avalanche report in the morning? What’s the snow profile like? What’s the slope angle and which direction is it facing? Can you see a set off of an avalanche? Can I continue or do I have to return? When you follow the tables and read them with attention, these and more questions should shoot through right through your head and prompt you to evaluate conditions and safety issues carefully.
“Check your line” does not impose any prohibitions, but wants to encourage individual responsibility and make reflections possible.
