The countdown is on! With less than 50 days to go, the seventh FIS Snowboard World Championships will start in Swiss winter sport mecca Arosa. From January 13th until 20th, 2007, everything is centring the snowboard sport. All in all, 27 medals will be awarded in all five World Cup disciplines. Men and ladies will struggle for Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Parallel Slalom, Parallel Giant Slalom, the Halfpipe and Snowboard Cross. The competition for the honour as a Big Air World Champion is reserved for the men.

Male competitor

No wonder 40 nations will take part in the WCS so far. However, the quotas for participation are limited. A total of 32 riders per nation are allowed to start (with a maximum of 18 of either gender). For each gender and discipline there is a maximum of four snowboarders. In addition, every reign World Champion gets a personal spot in the respective discipline.

At the moment, the WCS organiser’s preparations are on full speed to guarantee the best possible conditions for the sportive highlight of this winter. “Right now, we are building the whole infrastructure like grandstands, tents and for example the power supply,” says Hello Haas, General Secretary of the WCS. “In addition we are producing snow for all the slopes to also guarantee the sportive quality and are pushing the World Championships in Switzerland with TV-spots and advertising.”

Female competitor

The participating riders are also hoping for a lot of spectators. Manuela Laura Pesko, a favourite for a Swiss Halfpipe medal, explains: “I’m looking forward to competing in Arosa. I hope all people will cross their fingers for us!” The 2006 Halfpipe World Cup winner is planning to present a great show and is working on a run which differs from the one I showed at the Olympics. In Turin, Pesko placed seventh but is hoping for a better result here.
