The superpower US channel ESPN as teamed up with French channel Canal+ to make this big event happen in Europe for the first time. It will be divided in ski and snowboard – obviously no snowmobile event. For the snowboarding, halfpipe and slopestyle are on the cards for sure, and maybe big air. The Euro X-Games is intended to happen between the American Winter X-Games and the Burton US Open.
ESPN contacted a few European TV channels for partnership and with Canal+ being the most responsive to the idea, both channels started concentrating on the idea of running it in France. They visited several resorts in France, including La Clusaz, Avoriaz, Les Arcs, Les Deux Alpes, but finally Tignes was chosen to become the ‘European Aspen’. Rumors says that the resort will put 5 Millions Euros into the event and its infrastructure.
An official announcement should be done in the coming weeks, but we are pleased that such an event is being put together when it’s the most needed
for the industry. It’s a real chance for snowboarding to reach to people that are usually not watching, and maybe also a real chance for a European to win it – if we do the European SMS system of course… ain’t that right, Torstein? Last good thing about it, the Tignes Airwaves will be no more.
More when we get it…
