Ahead of tomorrow’s release of KBR’s 2012 release, Snake Bite (which is frickin’ sick and easily their strongest film to date), we hit up rider/producer and general gent Petrus Koskinen to find out what it’s all about…
For those who don’t know, can you give us a brief little history of KBR?
KBR is a bunch of friends who think snowboarding is the coolest thing in the world. Snake Bite is our 8th movie. Me and Toni [Kerkelä] kind of founded KBR when we were kids. I guess we have now got attention outside of Finland for about three years. Our latest movies are KBR Meets You and Homework.
Who are the key players behind the scenes on KBR?
All of our riders: Toni Kerkelä, Me, Janne Lipsanen, Antti Jussila, Niko Länsiö, Sami Luhtanen, Elias Veijola, Sakari Lähdesmäki, Roope Höynä and lots of friends. I have been producing and directing stuff besides riding past years. Mikko Suomalainen was the main filmer last season, Eesu Lehtola was our graphic nerd and Mikko Kuiri was doing some contracts with the bands and stuff. Thanks to the whole crew. You guys did an amazing job!
Now you’ve just dropped your latest banger. Sum up why kids should watch Snake Bite in one sentence. Ok, in two sentences if you need..
Oh boy. Snowboarding rules.Snowboarding indeed rules, as does Petrus. Switch nosepress in Jyvaskyla. Photo: Niki Rautanen.
Was there anything new brought to the table filming for this movie from your previous projects?
There is some 16mm film footage mixed with the DSLR and HVX footage. And a lots of new spots.
What was your biggest challenge this year?
Getting the riders to film stuff in backcountry. I am working on it for next season.
Did you have any new riders in the crew? How do you select new additions and how did they work out?
Sami Luhtanen was totally new. It was a really easy choice because he is good friend of all the riders already and one of the best all around shredders in Finland these days. And on the top of it his partner Dakine wanted to support the movie as well. I guess it would have been stupid not to film with him. It is really important for us what comes to new riders that most of the riders know the new guy already. Was good to have you on the crew Mr. Lothar!
How difficult is it to stand out amongst all the swarms of hyper talented Finnish riders? We’d say your films offer a solid platform for those less-well known riders to be seen. Do you think that’s the case?
There are so many sick and motivated riders in Finland and sick movies as well. For example the latest PT Films movie was off the hook. Juuso Turkka for president! I agree that KBR is a good platform for our riders and it is hard to say exactly why. I think the fact that I have been working really hard not only for myself but other riders too has been one of the big things for our crew.
Have to ask: where were the snow tits? They looked epic…
Snow tits are in Ruka. The guys who arrange the spring mayhem called Wappulounas made those tits for the event. And we wanted to film them after the event. It’s sick how unique and fresh obstacles those guys do every year for Wappulounas.
Which riders really impressed you most this year?
Jake O-E in The Darkside and Viktor Wiberg in Blue Balls.
More generally, which video crews across snowboarding stoke you out?
Definitely the Videograss crew and also the Random Bastards crew.
It seems there are fewer and fewer ‘regular’ movie companies producing traditional dvds, and way more riders making quality online edits or
guys like yourselves making quality movies. Do you have an opinion on whether this is positive or negative for snowboarding?
Really hard to say. I think it’s both. But for example the KBR crew would never be there where we are now if we had stick only for the DVD distribution.
Finally it might be too early to say, but what are you plans for KBR in the coming season?
To film a new movie. Trying to get the all-around riders more into backcountry and keep the same urban vibe going on. We are going to release the movie in three different pieces. All of the pieces will be kind of three different mini-movies which all are linked together. We will see!
