French rider Mathieu Crepel has been putting together a day at the famous Pic du Midi for a few years now, but this time round La Crepe is announcing a full-on 3-day-long event, with a TTR slopestyle contest of a new kind. We caught up with Mathieu in Hintertux and asked him a few question to shed some light on what will go down in the Pyrenees.
Onboard: So Mathieu, you decided to take things forward to put on a TTR event in the Pyrenees for the first time. What will be the format of the contest?
Mathieu Crepel: The principle is that when the riders arrive to the event, each one of them will write down two tricks on a paper that will go in a box from which the judges will pick randomly five tricks. So those five tricks will be performed by all the riders in a jam session.
OB: And what will the slopestyle look like? Did the HO5 crew shape it?
MC: Yes, it’s HO5. It’s a double line, with two kickers. The first one is an old ski jump from 1936, in the forest. The second one is a step up. It will go from the most simple tricks to the most technical ones at the end. I think it can be very interesting for the riders, who can really concentrate on the execution of the tricks, and for the crowd it will be interesting to see the different styles of the riders. How the same trick can look completely different from one rider to another.
OB: Does it mean style will be more important than in another contest?
MC: The same criteria are taken into consideration for the judging like at every other contest: amplitude, style, landing etc… But it will be also very important that the riders have done the five chosen tricks. And at the end, two or three riders will go head to head in a final with two jumps.
OB: Will it be accessible for the crowd from the bottom of the slope?
MC: Yes, it’s at the bottom of the resort. And all the riders will stay in a chalet in the woods close by. There will also be a photo exhibition with old times pictures of the jump, and a freeride day on the Pic du Midi, with a night up there too.
