To celebrate the launch of our Music issue we asked some of the riders whose bands are featured in the magazine to contribute a tune for your listening pleasure. What follows is a brief intro to the bands, and a tune of their choice. Be sure to visit their web pages to and stay tuned to onboardmag.com.

MATADÖR

>>> Download Hiten Bitten by Matadör (right click, or control click and select “Save link as…” or “Download linked filed”)

Jonas Hagstrom’s latest musical project is called Matadör and is a rock band with a sound that is a concoction of Queens Of The Stone Age and Fu Manchu. The quintet consists of Tony Leek on vocals and guitar, Henric Boijia and Jonas on guitar, Robin Lindqvist on bass and Emil Karlsson on drums. He describes it as being a relatively new band featuring some of the best musicians coming out of Östersund, Sweden. Matadör is now busy recording their first album as well as trying to fit in as many live performances as possible. SUNDAY SONG

>>> Download Light Years by Sunday Song (right click, or control click and select “Save link as…” or “Download linked filed”)

Along with Ile Eronen’s snowboarding talents, much ado has been made of his musical career and his songs have graced more than one shred vid in the past few years. From day one Ile has played music with his best mate Tamu and their first band was called The Loosers. The Loosers split, but elements reformed as the Hi Heels. The Hi Heels too came to a sticky end however, he and his old mate Tuma were soon playing together again on Friday and Saturday nights, putting tracks down that they listened to hung over on Sundays. Inspired by bands such as Modest Mouse, Pedro the Lion and Elliot Smith Sunday Song has a hook of folk and a melancholic darkness, in which Ile says he finds “joy”.

FILL YOURSELF

>>> Download Against the Wall by Fill Yourself (right click, or control click and select “Save link as…” or “Download linked filed”)

Jaakko Seppälä and Anssi Manninen make up two fifths of the Finnish metal band Fill Yourself, with Jaakko tearing through song sheets on his Fly V and Anssi beating the living daylights out of his drums. Comparing themselves to Ensiferum, In Flames, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Amorphis and 3 Inches Of Blood, you can imagine what their sound is like: axe-grinding, larynx-rasping, ear-bleeding metal with no compromise. Their playing is tighter than a gnat’s chaff and the energy with which they punish their instruments gives you boil-sized goose bumps and a desire to bang your head like it’s the opening night of the Monsters of Rock!

SUPER-U

>>> Download What News From Cornwall by Super U (right click, or control click and select “Save link as…” or “Download linked filed”)

Super-U, in the bands own words, is “essentially guitar-based indie with a bit of folk, country and rockabilly mixed in”. Their songs have been used on some of the UK’s snowboard movies, not to mention a dubious ‘seasonaires’ documentary on Channel 4. Lately they’ve had their tunes in movies from Lockdown Projects and Dropstitch, and David Benedek seems to be down with the U too. Today, with a few changes to the line-up (Chris Moran and Ivan were lost to day jobs while sax and flute were added to the ensemble), Super U are in the middle of recording their first album. “It’s coming along nicely,” says Wallace. “We’ve started our own label to release it on, called Sack The Juggler. It should be out early next year.” So if you’re into a bit of Northern shanty rock, check out the following.
