The turn of the year is traditionally time for reflection. Casting your mind back over the year past, with veins still coursing with the excesses of Yuletide cheer, can help one prepare for that which is just beginning. Remembering successes, learning from mistakes; the highs, the lows… ahh, sweet reverie.
07 was a funny one for sure. What was an undisputidly crappy winter for snow has been tempered with a strong start to the current season. As industry bigwigs sweated an old fella named Terje soared 9.8m above a monster quarterpipe, the new generation stepped up to show snowboarding’s future is a fertile one and riders travelled hither and thither to pray at Ullr’s altar while at the same time questioning whether they were simply becoming nothing more than shred-hungry, nouveau Easter Islanders by doing so.
Competitive snowboardings’ one true tour, the TTR, once again presented a killer season of progressive contest shredding and anointed their second batch of World Tour champions – Shaun White and Torah Bright – and the start of 0708′s tour shows signs that the rookies are not content to rest on their laurels and wait in line as Torstein Horgmo sits atop the pile at the turn of the year.
Despite the crappy snow, powder turns, although rare, were had and in the absence of good conditions riders, photographers and filmers were forced to flex their creative bone and get wicked with anything they could, often with epic results. As we said, 07 was a funny one for those who call themselves snowboarders, but we hope it was also a fun one. It was for us.
So, as the curtain comes down on 2007 and the New Year enters stage right, we take a look back at last year through the lens of our senior photographers Scalp and Peter Lundström in a series of extended galleries chronicling their year, month by month.
Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, Onboard raises a glass of bubbly to you and 2008, and says thanks for the memories to 07. Here’s to snow.
