The setup in Augsburg’s Willy Brandt Platz

Looks like a nice town, Augsburg. After an inadvertent tour of the town we eventually found Willy Brandt Platz and the rail setup. For the crowd of a few thousand spectators, the guys had set up (from left to right) a flat-down box, a kink box with two little bits either side, and a down rail. In full effect were a healthy number of the IsenSeven crew, many of the euro Forum team and several other rail heads.

Here’s Fips droppin’ back lips

The action on the boxes was pretty tap-dance heavy with …to…to…to…to…to… (insert rail trick names as appropriate) combos flying round. Some dude got his arse out on a nice front board. Marco Smolla looked to be killing it with his switch 50-50 on the side rail to sw bs 180 on to and through the kink to bs 180 out on the kink box. That’s hard to write, let alone read, so it must be even harder to do. I think I saw one of our bloggers, Fips, styling over the flat-down so I’m sure he’ll give a more in-depth version of events.

Another back lip? Or did he tap dance into it? Now that would be cheeky…

One other thing to mention, though. Daniel Ek. This kid dropped in to the kink box with heaps of speed and, what the hell?!, tried to backflip off the flat part. Landing in a crumpled heap and only millimetres from a savage beating didn’t seem to deter him and next chance he got he tried again with even more speed. Too much speed, as it turns out, so he just did the fastest 50-50 in the world ever. Third time’s a charm, though. With the crowd expectant, Daniel dropped again, flipped off the flat, kinda tailbonked the last bit of the box and stomped it.

The crowd and riders went nuts, the Forum gang picked him up and carried him round like he’d just won a Grand Prix or some shit. That was pretty crazy. Props, Daniel. You mentalist. We had to leave not long after and as such missed the final but it seemed a pretty cool event in a pretty cool town. More on it here.

Here’s my entry for The World’s Shittest Photo competition. Some heads in a cinema. Great. Enjoy!

Anyway, back to Munich to the Forum cinema for the Burton For Right Or Wrong premiere. I guess you read what the other guys thought when they saw it at Mondial, and I can’t really add much to Youri’s views. Like he said, I kinda have mixed feelings. I found parts of it super interesting offering a pretty much unique perspective on what snowboarding is as seen by some of Burton’s riders. Müller’s stuff, as ever, really stoked me out, both his riding, his musings and the fact that he got distracted in an interview by a bird of prey: “Look, eagle!”

And after the film, the obligatory party. Free tinnitus for all…

It was also cool to see that these guys are human and occasionally back out of stuff they’re not feeling, like Jeremy ‘master orator’ Jones. Most of the riding is sick, with standouts being Müller, Mads’s hip and Jones’s huge gap boardslide. Following the US team kinda got up my nose, but if the filmmakers decided to show the competitive side of snowboarding from this perspective then I guess it’s inevitable that you’ll get the flag waving and teary-eyed interviews. Whilst it might not be my idea of snowboarding, it’s undeniable that it is part of snowboarding, ahem, for right or wrong.

Dancing like no one’s watching

Oh, it kinda feels like winter here in Munich now. Happy days.

Cheerio.
