Hello From The Freestyle.ch

Tom Copsey Tom Copsey

We got here 2 days ago, but due to the fact we are staying in some ghetto-ass hotel where they say they “might get the internet in about 5 years” this is the first time I could get online. Memo to self: must ask the powers that be to put us up in a decent hotel next trip. Not like the frickin’ Hilton but at least one that has toilet seats on their bogs…

Checking the ir77 shizz in mellow surroundings

Anyway, Thursday night we headed to Lozza’s shop/gallery to check out the premiere of Lukas Huffman’s ir77 book/movie project. Your usual snowboard movie premiere this was not. Usually such affairs are packed, full of kids who can’t drink for shit and so loud and crowded that you can barely take in the vibe of the film before some stumbling juvenile spills your pint. This was an altogether mellower affair with 50 or so people checking out the film and drinking Lozza’s fine Swiss beer.

Lukas Huffman and Andrew Crawford

Because I could actually hear what was going on and watch the film without interruption, I can tell you a bit about the movie. Which is nice. I really enjoyed it and I’d suggest anyone who’s looking for a film that avoids the formulaic snowboard flick approach should check it out. Think last season’s December, but with more conventional, banging riding. A bunch of travel and ambience stuff mixed in with things like Shandy Campos hammering pillows, Huffman stomping his patented backcountry freestizzle, Crawford rocking and a bunch of other cool shit. I wanna see it again for sure. The book looks great too. Really nice layout, photography and words. Please can I have one please?

A couple a Bennys checking the exhibited art from the book

Yesterday we set up our tent at the event, were forced to listen to No Doubt’s Greatest Hits for approximately 5 hours as someone of a musically retarded nature was not able to change the CD, and got a sunburnt head despite wearing a hat all day. The public rocked in at 6pm and the shindig kicked off, which was of great relief because they managed to change the CD and banish Gwen Stefani to Room 101 to have her eyes eaten by rats. Iouri Podlatchikow (sic) was killing the mini ramp (he claims he was skating shit but I have to disagree) and then legged it over to the big air to take part in the qualifiers for the main event.

Sandro Dias won the highest air in the skate – 3.8m!

We were kinda busy giving away free stuff but managed to catch Christian Haller’s backside 9, Chris Kroll’s front 9, Gary Zebrowski’s sick front 7 and some other spills and thrills. I can’t believe I just typed that…

I dunno who made it through to the main contest, but whoever did will be up against Eero Ettala, MFM, Travis Rice, Antti Autti and a bunch of other dudes who were born somewhere in the mid 80s. It’s sure to be a banger of a contest on Sunday when they have the main snowboard finals.

the obligatory party shot – Misschief premiere

Today is Hangover Day as everyone got wasted at the Misschief Party but we’ll entertain ourselves with the crossover contest (ski vs snowboard vs skate vs freestyle MX – don’t ask me how it works, it just does, OK), some men backflipping motorbikes and some greasy food.

If you’re in Zurich, come by the event and say hi to us. WE HAVE FREE STICKERS! WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO! It should be a good day today, hope to see you there.

Till tomorrow…
