The Fiat Freestyle Team Germany, that is snowboarder Christophe Schmidt (who unfortunately couldn´t join us as he had to fly to New Zealand that day), big wave surfer Sebastian Steudtner, skater Jürgen Horrwarth, freeskiers Caja Schöpf & Tobi Reindl, windsurfer Flo Jung and the breakdance crew Funk Fellaz.
They all invited us to come to the lake of Ammersee which is half an hour from Munich. Unfortunately it was a bit cloudy that day and just had stopped raining an hour before but as we are all used to the cold and wet here in Germany, we put our bikinis, boardshorts and wetsuits on and started the little competition.
Jürgen trying to warm himself up before the comp…
In teams of three we had to compete in high diving (from ten meters height!), wakesurfing behind a boar and stand up paddling. Gloria from Planet Sports and me decided to be one team but still had to choose our last team member out of the Fiat Freestyle Team. Strategically we went for Sebastian Steudtner, incredible big wave surfer and no stranger to the water! What a wise decision… Other teams consisted of Quirin Rohleder (German editor of Surf Europe & Eisbach local from Munich), Boris Benedek (former snowboard pro and founder of Blankpaper Productions) and some other pretty ambitious participants. We expected a hard fight!
Choosing who goes for which discipline wasn´t an easy task neither: After Gloria and Sebastian both admitted they were afraid of height, I had to sacrifice myself and pick high diving (I didn´t tell them that I had never jumped from a ten meter tower before haha). So Gloria was first going wakesurfing and she killed it! With no experience at all in this kind of “sport”, she scored 10 points and became first in front of guys like Quirin who already surfed Teahupoo! Girls, girls, girls!
Gloria from Planet Sports showing that girls can rock!
Quirin from SE showing that boys can lose.
Second disicipline was high diving and here the breakdancers from Funk Fellaz were unbeatable – they managed to do a synchronic backflip! I tried a 360 (without grab haha but with a massive yell) and become second…
If Caya would have done this backflip within the comp her team probably had won.
So now our team was in the lead and we were keen on bagging it with the final discipline – a relay in stand up paddling.
Waiting for Alex Schwan to announce the start.
Well, we had an expert: Sebastian regularly does stand up paddling when he spends the winter months in Hawaii! But we hadn´t expected the back-stabbing means of some other teams (namely TTR´S Verena) who drove against my board shortly after the start which made me fall and drop behind.
Bad karma points, Verena haha!
But as it goes with bad karma points, Verena had problems at the turning point and when I handed the board over to Gloria we were at second place – Quirin took revenge for his loss in wakesurfing and was the first to reach the goal. But Gloria paddled as hard as she could, got ahead of Quirin´s team and came in first. Now it was Sebastian´s turn and we were convinced the victory was ours! But in the end it was as close as a race could be: Flo Jung from the other team seemed to be as much trained in stand up paddling as Sebastian and it was a mere 10 centimeters that finally decided the race. We won!
Sebastian won us the stand up paddling race.
Normally Sebastian spends his free time here! Jaws, Hawaii.
We even won some real prizes! Each of us gets to rent a Fiat Qubo for one weekend. I´m already thinking about where to go with it: Maybe to the Hintertux Opening in October? A short trip to Italy when some swell hits the coast in fall? Or just a drive to the Ammersee to finally try a superman from the high dive tower?
Our winning team!
