Contests, blizzards and letting the hair down.

Rocking up to Donovaly. Yet more greybird.

Yesterday, we took Matti and Joonas over to another Slovakian resort, Donovaly, to ride in this Quiksilver contest.

Making the call to go was pretty tough as we could have done with the extra day in Jasna, but the weather forecast predicted high winds that would mean Jasna would have few if any lifts running.

The kicker landing.

Finnish contest training.

So we made the call and drove the 40 minutes down the road from Liptovsky Mikolas to Donovaly so the Finns could try to win some cash. Of course, it was dumping there too, and windy, which meant the small 12m kicker necessitated a ski-doo tow in up to 90kph just to get over it. And over it we were pretty soon as it became apparent that it was super sketchy. After some huffing and puffing the contest was abandoned for a jam session, and then that was abandoned when it became clear the howling wind and incessant snow were not going to let up.

That would be the contest canceled, then.

The event was rad, though. I thought it was gong to be some small local shred contest but it turned out it was a kinda festival atmosphere with a bunch of people in drinking mode from early doors and heaps of locals turning out to watch a variety of bands play. We met up with a cool bunch of Czech and Slovakian shredders and, after watching some killer old school Slovak rockers, we went and did what anyone would in such circumstances and after a week of work – we went and got wasted. Sami, Joonas and Basa even managed to hitch a ride with the police back to the apartment. Nice lot, these eastern Euros.

Old Sovakian rockers rocking out.

Nursing hangovers and sleep deprivation we drove back to Jasna and, yes, it was still snowing. We lost Matti and Sami so took a couple of laps while they shot and rode some windblown ice and waist deep pow. It’s nothing if not an experience here, that’s for sure. While the snow was certainly good in places, the hangover was taking its toll and we were just needing rest, so we’ve just bezzed into Liptovsky Mikolas, found a hotel and gonna take a sauna. How Finnish. Moi, isit.

Joonas with a textbook case of pre-hangover euphoria.

Think we’ll head up tomorrow morning before making the 9 hour drive back to Munich and some well deserved rest.
