In April 2009 a dream came true for five hobby surfers (from Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and the both pro surfers Iballa Moreno and Sonni Höhnscheid. Accompanied by the well-known, Spanish photographer Mario Entero they took off to an unbelievable trip to the end of the world to pursue their shared passion – Surfing. From Bali they ran through the Indian Ocean and passed the eastern Indonesian islands within 12 days on board of the Sama Sama with their surfboards in their luggage.
Dreamlike conditions at the Indian Ocean
The girls weigh anchor!
The trip was initialized by the five surf maniacs Lisa Veith (Blue Tomato Team) , Miri Pfnür, Karin Hösli, Clara Zeiszig und Catharina Strebinger. With their Girls-Bali-Boat-Trip concept they knocked on the doors of Blue Tomato, Roxy and the Balicamp. In the end they could rank those companies including Red Bull and Wüstenrot among their sponsors. Together with the two girls from the Roxy Team and the Blue Tomato Teamrider Lisa Veith they planned their two weeks tour through the waters of the Indian Ocean, from Komor, through the small Sunda Islands to Timor.

Their men had to stay home. Full of excitement the girls discussed their tour shortly after the arrival at the check-in at the Balicamp. Thinking of the following weeks, remote from any kind of civilization, in areas of deadly malaria, sea snakes, sharks and pirates, the girls slept not that good in the first night. But all of the fears were forgotten soon when the girls got on board of the Sama Sama and they started passing gorgeous landscape and were able to see perfect waves.
Forget luxury and drift out to the sea!
Teeth brushing and having a wash on deck, lion’s mane jellyfish, sunburns and angled fish became daily routine on board of the Sama Sama. But little discomfort on open sea was compensated easily by unique and breathtaking moments. And even the showering orgies in the rain were big fun for the girls.
“When you were brushing your teeth on deck, you were surrounded by lights. High above the rich starry sky and in the water plankton which glowed with the smallest motion.” tells Sonni Höhnscheid.

Doctor on board!
For smaller and bigger injuries and illnesses Dr. Lisa Veith was equipped perfectly. Fortunately the surf girls from the Alps were untroubled by those incidents for the most part. Just one or two of them suffered from seasickness…
“But now I realized that the boat wasn’t wobbling anymore, it was seesawing heavily from one side to the other. I was rolling from left to right and in the very first moment I thought it was funny but when I sat up to turn on the light, the fun was over. Suddenly a feeling of nausea overwhelmed me. Clara, who felt just like me, grabbed her pillow and blanked and ran on deck. I had no choice but to follow her as fast as possible…” Miri Pfnür recalls the first days on board.
To surf at „God’s left“ at least once in your lifetime. This wish was probably burning within all of the seven girls. Unfortunately skipper Klaus couldn’t fulfill those desires, but he compensated the girls with other ultimate spots. In “Wainokaka” the surfers came to know the true promise of picture-book waves.
Also “Mengkudu” is known as Hot-Spot, which they reached after a stopover in “Tarimbang”. The whole day the girls enjoyed high, fast lefts. But the afternoon brought another surprise:
“Iballa and me were sitting on the peak as suddenly two fins were approaching fastly. We firstly estimated the worst as suddenly to dolphins were jumping out of the water. Two more came along, one of them jumped in the air a half meter behind me. I thought he might land on me” Roxy Teamrider Höhnscheid describes the situation.
Flirting on open sea!
In between the wonderful surf sessions the girls didn’t miss out the small flirts and completed the classical holiday cliché with them. In the morning after the transit a second boat joined the Sama Sama. A lot of tanned surfers as well as friends of the captain were on board. With the announcement “we’ll come over and kiss all of you!” the newcomers boarded the Sama Sama.
Finally the surf girls let off some steam nearby Roti on long waves and big swells. But the spot was not owned by the girls. Together with three older surfers the girls tackled several waves. It came out that all of the accompanying surfers are CEOs of diverse, well-known companys, who pitch into waves together since years. The girls wanted to follow their example and promised themselves to indulge their passion in the future and go on another boat trip together (when the first of them gets 50 at the latest).
Next to surfing without restraint there was also a mission the girls had to accomplish. The surf chicks have been awaited eagerly in the small village Savu. To improve the water supply they had to give a jackhammer to the catholic priest Klaus Lackner. The 60 year old is there since years to provide development aid.
